River Tummel on Friday. 20 lb+ on a fly called a ghillie. I lost another similar sized fish the day before on the Tay. Otherwise a quiet week for the catching but a brilliant week for the fishing. Colin

No text on your initial post Colin but a picture is worth a thousand words. Wow! what a fish! I have had a couple of flings on the Dart in recent days with sunk line and big fly on recent high water...no touches but good to be back on the river. When things fine down a bit I'm looking forward to using the trout gear again. We anglers always moan about lack of rain so shouldn't really gripe about a good head in the water table for the coming year.
Regards to all Grizz

Hi Paul,
A thought, probably b*llocks,though!
Beavers and Salmon were around long before we were and managed fine.
Can't see why all of a sudden the Beavers are going to cause the Salmon a problem.
Unless, of course, we've messed everything else up that much that the Beaver activities will now have an impact.

Unless, of course, we've messed everything else up that much that the Beaver activities will now have an impact. Agreed Yeoman. Found this online which sums it up better than I can "However, some evidence from our European counterparts suggests anglers have little concern with the effect of established beaver populations on migratory fish. In Norway, beavers share the same watersheds with some salmon and trout fisheries. Here, populations of hatchling salmon have been recorded above a series of beaver dams up to 1.6m high and over 600 metres in length, suggesting the passage of adult fish (Halley and Lamberg 2001). Other studies have shown juvenile salmonids are able to pass over or through dams to continue their downstream migration (Bryant, 1964; Swanston, 1991; Alexander, 1998) and adults use side channels created by the diverted flow to bypass dams. Parker and Ronning, (2007) believed that, due to the low frequency, small size and short life-span of the beaver dams on spawning tributaries in Norway, their effect on upstream and downstream migration of salmonids was negligible, and should have little impact on the reproductive success of salmonids in the long term. This is supported by Pacific and Atlantic salmon experiences in North America (Collen and Gibson, 2001). "

At last there are fish about.
Went out on the Exe on Monday, reasonable anmount of water but very dirty.
fallen back a bit today but very clear. Three salmon lost and one brought to hand on the stretch i was fishing- none by me.
Sadly EA have said no to an extension this year, but are putting a flush down from Wimbleball to encourage teh salmon up out of the estuary and lower Exe.
Anyone wanting a few hours after them on Friday with me, pm me with a pohone number!
Cheers.

Hi Ben,
A Mixture of the two, but from my perspective the only reason for a spinner today was reachablility with a cast- there are several spots where a fly cast is near impossible unless you are in a wet suit rather than waders!
Cheers, Paul

Some pictures of coho recently caught on fly out on the Wild West coast of Vancouver Island. All fresh from the sea and go like trains to try and get back there. More reliable fishing than Scotland and the scenery just as good. A long way to go but it makes you think. Colin.
