Hello all
My Father is over from Ireland on a rare visit and it has been decided that we should have a few hours on Kennick this weekend, I see from their website that they have a pairs competition on the 6th, will there be any practice days? Is it likely to be mega busy on say Friday? Obviously other reservoirs are available.
Many thanks

Well, we fought our way through the crowds ( it wasn't that busy after all ) and spent a few hours on Kennick today. My Fathers bad back meant that wading a river was out of the question and he had to take the odd break between casting, but you can't keep a good angler down. The fish weren't really in a biting mood and although I caught some on nymphs and buzzers the most successful tactic was either a damsel or gold head montana pulled quite quickly. My distance casting could do with some work, anyone wanting to know how to throw the perfect tailing loop when double hauling please stay behind after class as I seem to have become an expert! ( it must be at least 5 years since I cast more than a dozen yards). Despite the bad casting some fish were caught and returned. A good day even without good fishing. I even caught a Brown. Brought back some nice memories of fishing at Kennick with my Dad and brother back in the eighties except now I'm the one tying on the flies!

Great report , thank you for posting. My father and I spent many happy hours up there from the middle sixties when it was brown trout only. Some of the flies we developed back then I am still using to great effect. Who needs blobs and boobies ? Colin.

Thanks Billyfish Yes not sure I recognise the current reservoir flies much, for what it's worth here is my all time favourite "Kennick combo" ( admittedly the rib on the montana is modern). I must admit to using a boobie once or twice before though, purely for medicinal reasons you understand.

Our three "go to " flies were the Bloody William, Rusty Blue and Nice's Favourite . Cochy bondhu and Black and Peacock spider good as well. Colin.
