I don't now if anyone else has done much fishing, grayling or otherwise but I seem to have been pretty lucky with the weather so far and have managed to get out once a week and on a couple of occasions a few times more too.
It has been pretty mixed as you can probably imagine with cool, crisp days and others when the temperature has been a little higher where we have seen a few large dark olives skittering across the surface and in bigger midge hatches even the odd rising fish.
The friend I fish most of the time with and I have this really nice routine going. I buy coffee and he arrives with warm sausages in baps with onions and sauce. We talk, eat the baps and drink coffee and then eventually get into my car to head to our destination. When we feel like we've caught enough we head back to where he has left his car and have another coffee while talking about the day.
I think I enjoy these parts of the day equally as much as the actual fishing itself.
Do you prefer to fish alone or enjoy the company of a friend when you're out on the water?

We had a good day at Exe Valley fishery last Friday. Nice dry day with a balmy 12 degrees temperature . By arrangement with Sue we were greeted with a hot bacon bap and a cup of coffee before we commenced fishing . On a three fish keep and three c and r ticket I fished floating line with small flies to fish cruising just under the water. I landed my six fish and had a few more pulls. I had two on a black D B , two on a Sawyers PTN and two on a Bloody William ( one of my fathers patterns). The fish all went well and averaged three pounds. A really nice day out which will help to shorten the winter. Again by arrangement Sue brought down some hot soup and rolls for our lunch. Colin.

I'm ashamed to say I ate 2 the other week! The thing I've noticed recently is that I usually share a rod when I fish with a pal. This a fun way to fish and I guess it is partly because I'm used to standing next to someone on a river all day but is a nice way to help each other out too. Recently though, we've been fishing a pool or two apart and giving a quick shout if either of us catches a nice one or just catching up when one of us has finished the pool they were fishing. I've really enjoyed this too. Personally, I've never really been a fan of going for a days fishing and then seeing your pal at either lunch or at the end of the day but that is just me. Part of what I love is sharing the day with your pal be they highs or lows and being there if they catch a fish or two as well.

Well, i've not managed to get out at all - but that's by design more than bad fortune. I'm seriously looking forward to the new season and, hopefully, will have access to new waters if an application bears fruit (more on that at a later date, hopefully!). I'm also planning on spending more time on Dartmoor, wild camping and fishing, or just doing the odd day here and there.
In terms of fishing with a buddy, i've fished with HardyTim a few times and we tend to leapfrog each other, but still stay in touch - I agree it is nice to fish with a pal, but I do also like to fish alone. Somehow the solitude, being 'in' nature and personal headspace does me the power of good.
Anyway, here's to a good new season with, hopefully, plenty of new challenges.

It won't be that far off now Pusser.
Like I say, I'm used to just sharing a rod but I plan to do a bit more fishing on my own too. It is something I haven't done much of over the last few years.
One thing I've been aware of is when you fish with a pal is that, in my case at least, I choose them very carefully as I want someone who will enjoy when someone catches a fish no matter who it is and they have the same outlook on fishing as I do in that it isn't about size or numbers and there is no need to thrash the water to a foam either.
I've made a few mistakes in the past and when sharing a rod one time I had to say to the person who'd hogged it for a good hour or so that I was thinking about billing them for my time as it felt like I was standing there like a guide!

That’s funny Pete.... they must have been appalling. I can’t imagine fishing with someone anymore laidback and generous with their time when on the water, when we have fished your home waters together I’ve found the hardest part is getting you to fish any of the honey runs and pools as you are so keen for your fishing partner to enjoy your river.... I hope he was suitably embarrassed😀

I don't think they were being greedy but just got caught up in the excitement of the stream I'd taken them too. I was just too polite to say anything but a day off and a chance to go fishing was too much for me to keep biting my lip!
BTW, you've fished the stream and so you'll know why they were so excited.

I paid a visit to Cape Town and fished the mountain streams last week. Sight fishing for 12 inch rainbows in the midday African sun felt absurd, but they don't seem to mind a bit of heat out there. Also, you need a good pair of hiking boots. My guide was kind enough to write a blog post about the trip: paracaddis.wordpress.com/2019/02/13/a-phone-a-net-an-eel-and-an-ant/

Very good article Andrew . It must have been great to visit old haunts and get some sun on your back.
Closer to home I went to Sutton Bingham with a group of friends last Thursday. Despite being recently stocked, and it only being the second day of the season, it wasn’t easy .Very few limit bags of 5 fish . We managed a few but we had to fish hard for them . This is preferable to catching your limit in half an hour. Most successful fly seemed to be the montana allowed to sink a bit on a floating line and retrieved slowly. We’re going to have another go next week. My turn to cook the bacon butties. It’s not all about the fishing. Colin.

Kennick opened today, a mild 10 degs and light winds made for a good day. Fish mainly caught from the narrows up towards the causeway and with a minimum size of 2lbs was great to be casting a line again. Kennick Fly Fishers first competition of the year is next Sunday 24th. For more info on the Club calendar, visit www.kennickflyfishers.co.ukJohn

Sutton Bingham today was very good. The fish appear to have settled in and are in a taking mood. Floating lines and smallish flies , not lures, worked well . The fish are in great condition and really go . Weight wise in a catch of 5 they average out at nearly 3lb each. Short casting and a slow retrieve all the way in at a fairly shallow depth seemed to be the key for success. For the light weight tackle enthusiasts a 9 foot #6 weight would have been adequate. Please don’t think it’s “ fill your boots “ time , there were plenty of blank returns. Next week it’s time to give Kennick a try. Colin.

I haven’t been fishing yet this season but was thinking of trying blakewell fishery for the first time next week as it is just up the hill from where I live. Does anyone know of any local clubs or free to fish rivers near Barnstaple? As I’m still very new to it all and am looking for some cheap local beats to practice and enjoy the countryside near me. It’d be great to find a fishing buddy to fish with, particularly now I have Fridays off to my leisure! Yippee, dedicated fishing time. Charlie
