Well, not that many weeks to go until the season opens. I'm champing at the bit to get my waders on and get out there!
I've got plans to do a few things which are new to me this year so hopefully i'll have an enjoyable one.
Anyone else planning anything fantastic this coming season?

Good to hear Pusser, it feels like we're on the homeward straight now. Although I've managed to do plenty of fishing over the winter the last couple of weeks of weather have meant that I've missed the chance to get back on the river again.
I plan to walk where I'll be swinging flies for salmon on 1st in the next week or so and that will really get me excited.
My plan is always to try and fish more but I think I may have things in place that should allow me to make that happen and so I hope to be able to spend time on the water in the company of good friends and enjoy the fishing we have in our part of the world just a little bit more.

I hope to [...] enjoy the fishing we have in our part of the world just a little bit more. Amen to that Pete, same as me.

Just looking forward to exploring some more of the CFFC water. Having been out on a few of the bank clearing sessions there appears to be a number of stretches that I failed to visit last season. I've rearranged my fly boxes to make more room for new patterns and promptly filled them up again!

I have to admit that sorting my fly boxes is one of my favourite pastimes. I'm not sure I should be sharing that publicly but it is nice to get off my chest anyway!
Looks like I have got back from the BFFI with the cold I usually manage to pickup so all is good.

I’m a lost cause in that regard... I decided before Xmas my nymph box was a disaster... loads of random patterns and weights, no chance of applying any logic or systematic approach to approaching what nymph to fish with... So since Xmas I have stripped down about 190 nymphs, predominantly to re-use the tungsten beads. I’m about halfway through re-tying size 14-20 with 2, 2.5 & 3mm bead (plus a much smaller number of mm), in about 6 different core patterns. I’ll also have a smaller numbers of things like peeping caddis. I’m about a 1/3 of the way through a similar process with my dry box. I can’t wait to finish them all and get out for the new season... I enjoy tying through the winter, but this was above my usual commitment and is starting to wear a bit thin! I will have a stellar set of flies for the new season though Just realised how many I have left to tie... need to pull my finger out!

Nice Boisker. Like the idea of writing the bead weight in the columns between flies.

A page each, for sizes 20, 18, 16 & 14’s and weight by rows.... I’ve never found a system for my nymphs that works, so hopefully this will help add some much needed order... Unfortunately it does really in the user taking the time to put them back in the right slot... Unfortunately he’s an idiot.... so I predict carnage after 1 month of fishing

TheAngling Trust has a new budget and a new recruitment drive for volunteer bailiffs.I don't know whether any of you, beyond those already involved, might be interested. See below.
Cheers, Paul
"We will soon start recruiting for the next induction of members of the VBS and will run the training day as above. If you know of anyone interested in joining the VBS then please ask them to email me Nevin Hunter <Nevin.Hunter@anglingtrust.net> or Karen Sarkar (karen.sarkar@anglingtrust.net).
Voluntary Bailiff Service (VBS) - SW England Induction Sat 18th May 2019 - Exmoor Suite, Junction 24 Conference Centre, Market Way, North Petherton, Somerset, TA6 6DF
I am writing to advise you that following the recent announcement that the Angling Trust has been successful in its bid to deliver the National Angling Strategic Services contract in partnership with the Environment Agency we will continue to develop the Voluntary Bailiff Service. As part of this we will be running an induction training day for new members of the VBS on Saturday 18 May 2019, at the Junction 24 Conference Centre just off of Junction 24 of the M5 near Bridgwater. We are hoping to train up to 30 new members of the VBS and the programme is likely to be as follows: 0900 Arrivals, coffee, registration, domestics, 0930 - 1015: Fisheries Enforcement Support Service – what it is and how it operates 1015 - 1100: Voluntary Bailiff Service Organisation & Expectations 1100 - 1115: Coffee/Tea 1115 - 1145: Fisheries Legislation & Enforcement – an overview of legislation 1145 - 1200: Voluntary Bailiff Service: Area and Deputy Area Coordinators – their role is explained 1200 - 1225: Pocketbook Rules/Report Writing – how to record successfully 1225-1230: VBS secure website – how to access and use the website 1230 - 1315: Lunch 1315 - 1400: Building Bridges – how the FESS is working to build understanding and trust with migrant anglers 1400 - 1430: Health & Safety/Risk Assessments – what to consider as a member of the VBS 1430 - 1515: Nets, Lines & Traps – what you may come across 1515 - 1530: Coffee/Tea 1530 – 1600: Wildlife/Rural crime overview – where the VBS role fits into the bigger picture 1600: Closing remarks & dispersal. Induction days have served well in the past to train new members of the VBS and have proved invaluable in providing local networking and links between agencies. The Angling Trust will be supported on the day by local EA Fisheries Enforcement Officers and current members of the VBS offering support and a mechanism for new members to become as effective as soon as possible. We are always keen to see as many members as possible from the EA and Police at inductions. Building early links with new VB’s has always proved beneficial to EA Fisheries Enforcement Officers. For the Police this may be the first opportunity to build an understanding of fisheries legislation, some of which is a Police responsibility and also to build links with people who will be out and about acting as ‘eyes and ears’ in local communities. If you are interested in attending the induction day please let me know as soon as possible. In addition to facilitating the day we will also provide you with refreshments and a lunch. You just need to get there!

It always amuses me how I think a fly that I've tied looks the business when in the vice but then spends the rest of its life stuck in a dark recess of my fly box. That having been said, there have been times where I've take a look at it and thought "what the hell" and tied on one of those patterns only for it to work really well. Not sure I've had many days like that but I do remember them.
Yup, I have all the good intentions of keeping a well ordered fly box and even yesterday that fell apart and I didn't change flies much. I'm sort of ashamed about the squirmy I was fishing but when the water is big and has some colour you've just gotta dig in a go for it!

Hello All, Me and my girlfriend hoping to do a bit more fly fishing this year. I learnt the basics of fly fishing with Pete a year or two ago and my girlfriend a very enjoyable first ever time fly fishing on the taw towards the end of last season. It was a gorgeous sunny day with barely a cloud in the sky and very little water, so not ideal conditions for fishing. However, She caught and goes it without saying released 3 little minnows and was delighted!! Sigh of relief. I just enjoyed being out on the riverbank on such a lovely day, what could be better.
I tied my first flies this year; a pheasant tail nymph, and am looking forward to seeing if they can lure any fish.

The volunteer bailiff training day on Saturday looks interesting. Does it cost anything and is there a minimum commitment or anything. I’m interested to learn more about what is involved.

Its free. There a more than a few forum members who have joined.
It is not demanding on time- all you have to do is to put in a report every time you have been on a river or lake- fishing or not.
You are prepared to report anything suspicious nd particularly warned not to be a hero and confront what you think is illegal!
Go tp the free day at bridgewater and make you mind up then.
Cheers, Paul
