with best wishes to barlebanker who has hopefully marked the day accordingly.
Today has been penance and payback day. (Family holidays loom- may in scotland. 1 day or 2 1/2 days fishing negotiated at Pitlochry. 4 days at fort william as yet unplanned. A few days around the argyll coast- 9 weight rid and steel trace ??)
So I've spent all day in the garden. stiff as hell, back complaining and, I must now confess, I've probably ruined the weekend for everyone- I took the hose to the onions!

Hi Paul,
you might be right, I'm sitting here writing this looking at some very large black clouds. I won't complain too much if we get some rain, the rivers could do with some water...any one out this weekend?

Got up to gales, rain and have looked at the forecast - none of which are good. Maybe give the weekend a miss and hope the rain has sent a few salmon up the Exe for Wednesday.
Get holiday cottages ready today as usual - have to make a living somehow. Have got to get some fly boxes and stuff out, packed and sent to be photographed for an fishing tackle exhibition in Europe so may do that this Sunday.
Tight lines and screaming reels to all those who manage to wet a line over the weekend.

Paul thanks for the birthday wishes, I spent the day in work A few days around the argyll coast- 9 weight rid and steel trace ?? Just what sort of razor toothed monster are you expecting to find Best of luck with Scotland, I was up in Sutherland for the two weeks either side of easter. It was a bit of a struggle with the weather but I still got a few (trout only, no salmon). I might post something about it when I've sorted through the photo's. Maybe Pete could give us a "What I Did On My Holidays" section for our exciting trips away from the Westcountry. Andy

I'll see what I can do Andy!
I found that Sunday was the most consistent fishing I have seen so far this season. Where we have been writing about bursts of activity and then the river switching off but on Sunday there was enough to keep the fish interested. I saw caddis, last few grannom, olives, gnats and even a lone mayfly!
The river (Taw) was needing some rain and hopefully might bring a few tourists up to our neck of the woods.

Speaking of tourists (ie me) I was hoping to skid down for a day on the WRT Taw / Little Dart trib beats this weekend (d**n, now I've told everyone, they'll all have the same idea ) Pete and all, do you have any predictions as to water levels, colour etc? I've been watching metcheck like a hawk, but can't draw any conclusions - and having been spectacularly blown out by the big brown Torridge in the past, would like to have some clue at least! Thanks for your help... Theo

Dear Theo, Pete is away in Wales for a few days for an esoteric ceremony either involving trout on an unpronounceable river or with the Celtic fringe of the Crediton Fly Fishing club! Its been raining here near Exeter on and off today and , given our weather is so localised here, have no idea what effect this has had on the Taw. You might like to add eathorvertonwebcam.org.uk/index2.html to your favourites as it shows thte gauge on the Exe at Thorveton. I reckon for my local rivers- Exe, Yeo, Creedy, a reading between 3 and 7 makes them fishable. At 7 I'd tend to thing of Kennick rainbows www.kennickflyfishers.co.uk or browns on Colliford or Roadford. It is slightly less reliable for the Taw, as this is N. Dartmoor fed rather than S Dartmoor for the Creedy and Yeo and exmoor for the Exe. Our other water on the Culm is fed from the Blackdown hills and can well be totally different. It is currently showing about 4.5- up about 0.5 on the day and 1.0 higher than it has sat for the last week or so. Although we have had some rain- even some heavy showers- this has so far had little impact as the dry ground has absorbed the water as it has not been both heavy and continuous. To the Taw. I had another great day our with Pete yesterday. He never ceases to amaze; in some 10 outings with him over the last few years he has always risen to the occasion and produced something special, exciting and new; each trip expands my knowledge- but that is a less difficult feat! He even conjured some forty fingerling perch to my klink on a freezing day at Roadford when nothing else was going to work- but taght me enough that I went back a week later and scored well. Yesterday was no exception. Pete e-mailed me Wednesday evening to say he'd passed the Taw on the way home and it still looked fishable but overnight rain could change our destination. It didn't. We fished the Fox & hounds water. The river carried a tinge of colour but was still very low- as low as a few weeks back when gn came down to help Pete with a teaching morning and was rewarded by a spectacular afternoon of catches on the Bray. Thanks entirely to Pete's uncanny knowledge of the trout's mind I nearly doubled my catch to date for the season despite having already spent some 40 hours on or in the water. This represents some 8% of the catch to date for the hotel's waters this so far and confirms Pete's view in his previous post that the season started on Sunday. Hope this helps- suggest you watch the weather and gauge, but if it does rain a bit more and rise a few inches, Pete reckons ther may well be some migratories around that have been waiting a while for an opprtunity to move up1 Cheers. Paul

Theo, I think you will be fine, as Paul said the ground has been dry and everything is growing like mad at the moment so little water is getting into the rivers. There might be a tiny tinge of colour in the Little Dart but not enough to worry you. Another webcam, again on the Exe just below the Exe/Barle junction, has just come on line. No height marker on it but it might help a bit www.execarnarvonfc.co.uk/menu_pages/exebridge-webcam.htmlBest of luck I'm heading up to the Barle around Simonsbath on Saturday, that should be crystal clear! Thanks guys - that's very helpful indeed - and it sounds like I could do with a day out with Pete to sharpen up my technique at some point!
Devon rivers were my first fishing love (via Simon Gawesworth at Woodford Bridge in the late '80s) - and I can't wait to get onto them again this weekend. Will let you know how I fare...
Many thanks again!

You should hit it just right Theo.
Am not out this weekend due to family commitments but might sneak an hour on the Tone later tonight.
I am hoping that the Taw will be up come the middle of next week as i am itching to have a go at the ST.

Taw didn't really get up in any meaningful way, just a bit of colour which has pretty much gone. I did have guests out on the river on Sun and one of them hooked into something that didn't stay on for long but judging by the bend in the rod was migratory. Would love to have seen it!
