Every May for the last few years Dulverton AA have been given access to the top of the Barle on Saturdays and the bank holiday Mondays. This is the water from Cow Castle all the way up to, and including, Pinkery Pond. So Saturday I headed up to the bit around Cornham Ford above Simonsbath. I like this bit better than the water below Simonsbath simply because you don't see any walkers apart from the odd one on the Two Moors Way. Looking downstream from the Two Moors Way I was plagued all afternoon by the downstream wind, I don't think I've ever had an upstream wind anywhere on the Barle However I managed to winkle out five trout from 6 to 10 inches. I doubt there are many bigger up there as there are so few deep holes to hide them in. I did see a fair number of trout in the stickles but they are outnumbered in that sort of water by the masses of salmon parr so I generally stick to fishing the pools. A trout, one of the smaller ones honestly Green! Tea time. I've drunk boiled water out of the Barle for years and its never had any affect on meeeeeeeeeeeeee... Looking up into Squallacombe. This tiny stream, hardly more than two feet wide, gets grilse up it in November/December. I did wander up it with the rod on Saturday but it is probably a bit too small to hold anything other than parr. At Cornham Ford. I'm going up again at the end of the month with a friend who wants to fish all the way from Simonsbath to Pinkery Andy

Looks stunning Andy. I have only ever been on the Barle downstream of Dulverton. I think it is the Barle you pass over when heading from Exford to North Molton via the Moor. I have lost count of the number of times I have nearly crashed into the narrow bridge that passes over it while trying to get a good look!

Of course it does, it's in Somerset! I have only ever been on the Barle downstream of Dulverton. There is a bit half way between Dulverton and Tarr Steps that you need to fish If it ever rains again Andy
