I guess we all felt this was happening but not on this scale. Sad indeed. Something must be done to stop this.

Hi all, Apart from some stunning fish from Boisker, I seem to be talking to myself on this forum! I have been progressively more guilt ridden buying salmon from supermarkets despite the overwhelming evidence about their practices both horrific for fishermen and frightening for consumers. Genuinely wild fish are impossible to source and enormously pricey. Pacific salmon- available wild in some supermarkets- are just not the same. My problem has always been that my wife developed an unhealthy and expensive habit for salmon- fresh and smoked- when we live in Sweden for a short time in the early eighties where quality salmon was cheaper than meat. I have been loth to confront this habit. I have just come across Faroe Island farmed salmon. see press article www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/recipes/8691401/Wild-salmon-from-the-Faroe-Islands.html A bit more expensive than supermarket still but not an arm and a leg so .As the Faroes have no salmon rivers its not directly affecting wild stocks (but obviously feeding them is still a possible issue). I tracked down two UK suppliers, both near Bristol- 0ne for limited precut portions and one sides to sort to your own needs. lovewhatyoueat.co.uk/fish-shellfish/salmon-fillets-from-the-faroes-islandslovethefishshop.co.uk/products/var-salmon/I choose the latter; 5kg arrived this morning. We had our first taste tonight. I found it much nicer that anything we have bought in the UK- even buying in bulk from Grimsby fishmongers. More importantly, herself ws equally if not more complimentary about its quality than I!! We won't be buying anywhere else! My conscience eased and herself feeling treated- win-win!! Cheers, Paul

Hey Paul Luckily Salmon was always one of the fish I least cared for... so I haven’t bought any for 5 years or more... my wife very occasionally buys it’s for herself, but hardly ever since I showed her some of the appalling salmon farming in Scotland. I always wonder whether people who are very vocal about it (especially on Facebook) have the same exacting standards for their meat , eggs or dairy purchase. The modern world is a tricky place to ethically source produce.... understandably people didn’t want to buy battery hen eggs on welfare grounds.... , so we all started buying free range.... the boom in free range currently causing the Wye to turn into algal soup... I guess the only real answer is to buy locally produced where you know the system that produced it wherever possible.... bloody tricky to pick your way through.

Apologies for the radio silence. Life has been busy and I've not dropped in for a bit. Terry, many thanks for the kind words regarding the podcast with Feargal. I usually post the new ones here but have omitted the last few. I think I've done 40 odd now, there is quite a library now. I've popped down the details below along with a really nice one on carp on the fly without using dog biscuits and then a follow up that I released on Thursday with Martin Smith that talks about the damage his local water company did to his home river and how he took them on. Interestingly, I was invited to be a guest on a FishPal Facebook live interview. I talked about pollution but the interviewer, Anne, showed me an image of an old Eat Sleep Fish cover where I was talking about sewage treatment works a while back. I've personally reached a tipping point and have had enough and am trying to do as much as I can to highlight and challenge what is going on. I had a long phone call with Feargal yesterday and after various articles in newspapers, publications like Private Eye, social media as a whole and perhaps even the podcast there is a realisation that we aren't going to go anywhere anytime soon. Lets see if we see changes. It is going to take time. If we do and there is an ancient, decrepit infrastructure that will need investing in. I hope you've had a wonderful season. The trout fishing for me has been some of the most amazing I've seen especially after we were able to hit the rivers again. Salmon have, hardly surprisingly, been a little more challenging but they are starting to appear. No apologies necessary Pete but it’s nice to see you back. Perhaps this could be the start of the fight back for all of those who care. Really enjoyed your piece On Dartmoor ( my spiritual home ) in the WTT Salmo Trutta Magazine. Keep up the fight. Terry

I am hoping it does lead to a positive change but I think it is going to take more lobbying though.
Pleased you like the piece. I've been sitting on it for a while and pleased it found a home. I wonder if you can guess that it is just below Prince Hall I'm talking about with just a hint of artistic license, just a tiny bit!

Great podcast Pete keep them coming (much needed fishing fix for the winter months). I will also admit to taking TMS with me on a few fishing trips, even if you could barely get any reception on 198 long wave! Mobile phones with digital radio give better reception but don't have quite the same crackling magic. I also started my fly fishing on the Teign and new Roddy Rae when I was younger. Not sure what happened to my career in TV though🤔.

I have been busily recording more this week as fishing is on hold and I've delivered the magazine to our designer slightly ahead of schedule. For me, a large part of it is uncovering the stories from people and learning a little about the journey their lives have taken with fishing being a constant through good times and bad.

Second that Pete, Keep them coming, you seem to be a natural interviewer. I am really enjoying them in these crap days. I have a soft spot for the Teign Chris and had a great nights sea trout fishing with dear old Roddy. I first met him at a Snowbee open day years ago and watch him filling his pockets with sausage rolls. He saw that I had noticed and said with a smile he was guiding a very hungry client that afternoon.

Many thanks Terry, they'll keep coming as long as people enjoy them but to be honest, I just love talking fishing with people.
I knew Roddy but probably not as well as many on here. It is nice to hear he is still so fondly remembered though.

Here's the latest podcast where I catch up with Stuart McTeare. He is a river keeper who cares deeply about the river and the habitat of fish. He has also run a fishing lodge in Ireland that makes interesting listening. You can listen by clicking here or find on all the usual platforms or watch via YouTube below.
