I just wanted to wish everyone the very happiest trout season and that it is memorable for all the right reasons!
If anyone is able to head out today, the very best of luck.

Couple of hours today in the Axe... nice and sunny, but a cold NE wind gusting to mid-30 mph... intended to ‘euro’ but the wind was annoying... so wandered up the river with the duo, didn’t fish most of the time, just had a nose about.... but still... managed 1 trout and bumped one... Couple of LDO’s about Longer day planned tomorrow, may scoot about a couple of beats.. wind easing back a bit tomorrow, so hopefully a few more LDO’s may come out Nice to be back on the river

Good luck, I've been Chub fishing all winter when conditions have allowed, and every time it has warmed up a bit and the wind has dropped, I've seen LDOs come off.

I've heard it argued that the smaller shallower streams fish better in the early season, because they warm up more quickly, especially if they get plenty of light. On the other hand, if they are at higher altitude I imagine that things kick off a bit later. Do all of the Devon rivers experience LDO hatches?

I tend to fish a little further up from where I normally fish as, in my experience, the rivers give you a slightly better chance of finding a fish. There are certainly LDO on the Taw but I personally only really start to see fish feed more actively at the surface when the grannom is under way in April. I did see an epic 10 minutes or so of Large Brook Duns yesterday but even these good sized flies failed to provoke a fish to rise so I went back to my double hander! I forgot to post but here's my open day. I didn't edit or retake anything just spoke about what it meant to me. So if you fancy joining me for 1/2 hour or so, you'd be most welcome! It looks like the weather’s going to improve next week. Tempted?? ”They’re under starter’s orders --- they’re off ”

I think that is one of the really nice things about where we live-options, we are lucky to have so many. When I've had the time, I've concentrated my efforts on salmon as the water has been good and I prefer to wait for consistently rising fish. Like you say though, we've some warmer days coming and the grannom should be on there way.

The big question is whether, having eschewed the trout, Pete ( or Emma!) have got a salmon or not! ??
I got out for the first time today for just over an hour. One suicidal 10" grayling out of season!
Waders didn't leak, casting full of knots. Weird that I was stumbling all over the river. AS the years start to tell, I normally stumble a bit wading, but have learnt over time to cope with the wobbles caused by dodgy knees,
However, I took advantage of various lockdowns to have two new knees. The result is, they are so good that they now correct my stumbles automatically, but I am also correcting for them too.
This double correction for each stumble is frightening, so I have to relearn all over again!
Cheers, Paul

Great to hear you’ll be in better fettle for wading this season Paul, having a bit more stability will definitely feel safer when wading. I’m gonna try and grab a couple of hours over the next couple of days whilst the wind has dropped back a bit and the sun is out.... hopefully the added warmth will tempt some flies out and fish up I’m delaying putting serious hours in until fish start moving a bit more

We've put some hours in for the salmon Paul, but no joys as yet. Hope the knees are good!
A really good number of grannom yesterday, I waited to see if any fish would move but nothing as yet. It was just nice sitting in the sun by the river. I picked up the double hander again just in case but the hunt continues.

Hurrah.... quick hour this afternoon... 17C... light wind and not direct from the arctic Managed to find 3 rising fish... caught 2, one didn’t want to play... First proper fish of the season was a classic slow rise, rolling straight over the top of the fly.... ....although not technically the first fish of the season, it feels like it actually started today Stood in the river with the sun on your back is definitely good for the soul....

Pete Tyjas "A really good number of grannom yesterday, I waited to see if any fish would move but nothing as yet." i.postimg.cc/mZ1Mtm97/Grannom-Pupa.jpgI don’t know what the form is here in Devon, but in the Marches/Border, the trout won’t show much at the start of the Grannom season because they’re stuffing themselves on pupae. I suppose it’s nearer and easier for them, they only start to show in numbers later on. You’ll walk along the river thinking it’s dead, – was that a trout turning in the corner of my eye or a trick of the light. Chances are it’s a trout chowing down on Grannom pupae. Greenwell nymph and spider come to the fore, I’d imagine Boisker’s creations would certainly be up to the task.
