The hatch was pretty good yesterday and was underway when I got there at 10am and still going when I left just after 4pm. I fished grannom emergers to any rising fish I found and got lucky.

I imagine that the lack of subsequent posts on this thread reflects the tricky high pressure conditions we have had for the last few weeks. Low air temperatures, brassy bright skies and strong East winds don't usually spell success, (at least for me!). How are others faring? Glad to see that there is a weather change coming for next week.

I've stayed off the rivers but did have an afternoon at Burrator. Just as you describe, bright sun, cold wind. Normally the kiss of death for me but the fish were stuffing themselves with buzzers and most pepole were getting takes consitently. Lots of brownies about as well as the rainbows. Managed to hook a few but also missed quite a lot.

With some cloud cover and the pressure dropping slightly headed up the west dart for a couple of hours. Didn’t really expect too much as the river is low but saw a few swallows and heard a cuckoo. So everything in the world rosy. Oh as an incidental dropped a size 14 DHS over a lonely small rise and all hell broke loose, thought it was a peal but turned out to be a 15” wbt. in very good condition. One of my best fish on the Duchy in over 30 years. A happy man today. Just hope it’s the start of a dream season. Or should I just dream on😎

Nice one, Terry. That's a cracker from any Devon River.

Congratulations Terry, a great start! The two biggest brown trout that I have seen caught during daylight on the Moor were both late April fish like yours, and in very good condition too. Mike Weaver's book describes how he also caught one of his best fish at this time of year from the Upper East Dart. I wonder where they go in the summer....

Well done Terry. Given the low water levels I spent the day at Fernworthy and also heard a cuckoo. Didn't catch any 15" trout though, mostly just caught the sun.

I haven’t fished up on Dartmoor yet this season... I was waiting for some warmth before heading that way... but I have been up on Dartmoor for work a fair bit over the last 2 weeks.. Up there 8am Sunday morn checking a site and some stock.... 2 Curlews overhead and 2 Cukcoo’s nearby all calling away... sat on a rock, drinking a coffee, out of the wind in the sun... a special start to the day

Thanks lads, much appreciated. Funny thing Chris I was set to go to Fernworthy today but after a food shop ( wine shop really) it was a bit late so decided on the river. We are destined to meet someday.

Did you meet an Irish fellow up there today? He's a friend of mine , he had 4 fish, all around the three quarter of a pound mark on small pennels. I was supposed to have gone with him but had some work on. I hope we have some rain for the rivers followed by some warmth , +14'c. It will be fun to see the fish at Fernworthy taking the Alder flies when they crash land on the surface, that's usually the first good surface action in the first few weeks of May up there.

Yes we did, had a nice chat with him about how Fernworthy used to be stocked with rainbows years ago, although some people don't believe it. He was obviously a regular and had no trouble taking his four fish. It must be at least 20 years since I fished there and I was a bit out of practice, needed a lighter set up and smaller flies (fish were eating small buzzers in the surface film i think) but still had a good day.

Opened my account on the East Dart with a fish to a Griffith’s Gnat, and returned the next day hoping that the flood wouldn’t be too big for fishing a beaded nymph. Wrong! At least the kayakers were happy, they were having a ball in the white water around Holne. After this good flush and with warmer conditions I would expect a much better period of fishing to come. Tight lines all.

Had a day on the Piddle Friday.... ‘blustery’ or more accurately the forecast 10mph was pretty consistently a 15-20mph wind for most of the day Plenty to hand, but the larger ones kept burying me under the undercut banks...

Glad you are up and running Johnie. Good old Griffith gnat. The level at Dunnabridge on the west dart was 1.86 metres at 4am this morning and has now dropped to 0.96 metres and dropping rapidly. This will do the river a world of good. Roll on the proper season
