Had an interesting one yesterday when I met up to guide a client. I put my fly fishing vest on a noticed that the box I have on the front of my vest was missing. Needless to say it is the box that has all of my main fly patterns that I use for work. I reckon there were almost 100 handtied flies. It s one of the moments similar to when you wake up in the night having dreamt you have gone to work naked! I reckon it came off when I was sea trouting Sun night. Thankfully I have box with a few spares that got me through and I'll be ordering some and hopefully picking them up today as I am out tomorrow. Its no big deal but has anyone else got to the river and realised they have arrived without an important bit of kit?
The Taw is painfully low at the moment and could really do with some rain.

Bad luck,Pete. That flybox will make a good find for someone lol. Looked at the Taw on Monday,in the last week its dropped away to nothing. Not worth fishing till we get some rain.

Pete,
Bad luck Pete, I feel for you.
Many years ago I found a large Wheatley box with hundreds of flies half submerged at Kennick. The owner had his phone No. engraved on the box so I was able to contact him and return the box. It's a tad late now but may be worth a thought for the new box.

Ouch! I've never lost a fly box but I almost have a phobia about it. I'm always checking that they are still there and the pockets zipped up, a bit of OCD maybe I drove down to the Axe one day and had a look over the bridge, as you do, before getting the tackle out. There under the bridge was a salmon (an Axe salmon is rarer than a dodo) so I rushed back to the car, waders on, net, reel, polaroids, box of spinners , r.... r.... where's the rod, at home So I went back the next day and got the bugger first cast I have lost count of the number of times I've gone fishing without my brain Andy

That’s bad news Pete, I make sure all my boxes have my name and tel no. on but that is no consolation to you or a guarantee that the finder will ring you if it’s found! I have a spare box of flies to see you over if you need to borrow them.

It was one of those real out of body moments when you realise something has gone really wrong. It was lucky I had a small box that did the job but I lost all of my scruffy klinks which is the fly I have the most confidence in and a few quill bodied dries and nymphs that had been also working really well.
The box I lost pins onto your vest and has a patch built in to and was really handy. The funny thing was that I had a similar incident with the same model a couple of years back then it was on a lanyard and lost quite a few then. The latest one was a birthday present from my wife and daughter so I really wanted to use it and I made sure it was securely fastened...clearly not well enough!
I can't believe this one went just 30 yards from where I lost the other one!
Thanks for the offer Richard you are a top bloke. I got on the phone to Simon at Turralls who are just up the road and I picked up a load this morning so I am sorted out thanks.
This afternoon I will be mostly tying scruffy klinks!

I keep all my bits in a supermarket tray and just put it into which ever vehicle that I am going to take. Once forget to take the phone so no one could get hold of me (he he he ) and another tome the milk (which was serious) as it meant there was no tea!!!
Please that you managed to get flies quickly - shame about the box always sad to loose one that was a present. Sure I can find you an old Wheatley if you are interested let me know

Thanks very much for the kind offer Fly Box Fan. I think I am OK for boxes but greatly appreciated. I sort of liked the idea of this box as it was nice and handy when I am working and means I can get flies or set ups ready really easily and change them over with minimum of bother. I have only gone back to using a vest this year having used a lanyard (or as GN calls it a necklace) so that I have everything for every occassion just so that I am prepared and so that I'll also not forget anything....

Oh Hell what a bummer Pete.
I have just done a complete sorting session of all my flies and got rid of anything that has not got wet in the last two years. Trouble is it makes all the boxes look a bit sparce.
Or looking at it another way I must use the same patterns over and over as I suspected.
Hopefully some kind soul may find your fly box and maybe mention it in a pub or at work and someone on here may get to hear about it - well you never know most anglers are pretty honest guys but without sites like this if I found a box I would not know where to start to find its owner (maybe the local clubs).
Maybe contact the owners/clubs/anglers down stream you may get lucky.
