In recent years this became my go-to loop for connecting tippet to furled leader, but after practicing some knots this evening I'm less sure: it seems to snap easily when you tie it using light weight mono, even taking plenty of care and wetting the nylon. Or is it just that I'm a bit rusty? Maybe all will be well once I get into the swing of it as the season gets going.

Hi Jonh, I must say I've never had an issue with it, may I ask what you class as light nylon? Are the other knots in the nylon OK? I did have a bad spool once that snapped at the water knot on two occasions until I checked the line with other knots to find they were all weak!

Mystery solved Chris: dodgy batch of supposedly brand new nylon purchased last month from a well known online retailer. No problems when I used some of the same leftover tippet from last season. Grrrr! This happened to me once before when I bought some leader material off the shelf at Bristol’s then remaining game fishing emporium. It kept snapping at a low BS but they claimed that was normal! That particular outlet is now gone forever (sadly).

I've had the same thing happen John, progress I suppose😀 never had a problem with the old maxima ultra green, you wonder if we've all been seduced by ever decreasing diameters that we maybe didn't need. I note that some manufacturers now supply their spools in uv resistant packaging, tells you something I think.

Have used ultra green for years and never had a problem even with old spools. You can open a barn door with 3 lb test. Mind you the fish probably see it for miles away but I like handicapping myself😄 I like your current vids. On you tube Chris keep them coming.

I hate to tell you chaps but the line in question was Maxima Ultragreen in 3lb! Until now it was my most trusted tippet, especially in higher breaking strains for loch fishing (anything from brownies to salmon) and it has never let me down. Ever. My faith in the universe has now been fundamentally shaken. I should add that I have also been using Preston Reflo Power which is very popular with coarse fishermen. Incredibly strong for a given diameter (comparable to fluorocarbon), knots reliably, and suits dry fly very well, especially with smaller hook sizes (16-20). However, it is very supple/floppy and quickly turned into a bunch of knitting when I used it to fish a team of 3 bushy wet flies on a windy day for sea trout. I guess you just have to adapt to the conditions. Meanwhile I am going to ask Farlows for my money back!

This must be a parallel universe that I've stumbled in to? Surely not ultra green!!
