I noticed dozens of swallows perching on the power lines at the back of my house this morning. They seemed late to arrive this year and by the looks of it they are getting ready to go. Thought this was a tad early but maybe it’s cooler back in Africa. Wish I could go fishing soon. Terry

I noticed they were grouping around our house too.
It is a highlight when they arrive but I do feel a tinge of sadness when they leave as it feels as though the fishing season is slipping away when they have left.
This one is going at an alarming rate although the years do seem to rush by as I get older!

Well your right about it slipping away Pete, it doesn't help that I've not been out since 9th of July, can't remember a season with so much down time but conditions dictate. I wonder how our rivers are coping with this drought especially the invertebrates?

I’ve probably had my worst season ever with regard to outings that I can remember and you are sure as hell correct about time passing too quickly. During a current cull of some of my fishing literature I have unearthed a 1975 edition of South West Water Authority angling guide. Can’t remember where I purchased it but it has some interesting content. Mainly the number of tackle shops we then had, now all defunct, and the number of reservoirs that were dedicated to fly fishing in the region. I stopped counting at 17 because it was just too painful. A season ticket at Kennick was £25 and a day ticket £1.50. Happy days. There may be a chance of some rain next week so must be positive and not too nostalgic. Terry

I remember fishing Kennick with my Father and older brother when dad's day ticket cost £5 and us juniors were £1 each. What a rip-off looking at 1975 prices!!

I've barely been to look at the Taw these past weeks but look at the gauges, it has been depressing viewing.
Some light rain this morning, it's a start...
Talking of tackle shops, I always liked the pet shop in Crediton that had a bunch of flies for sale there. It always made me smile.

We got some pretty heavy rain yesterday afternoon but not enough to impact the rivers here.
I walked alongside the Lapford Yeo this morning with my fingers crossed.

Just checked the EA gauges this morning. R Creedy up a metre overnight Lapford Yeo half metre, only a few cms on our other waters - every little helps!

It certainly does!
Funnily enough the gauge at Umberleigh hasn't updated since the rain began!

I dread to think of all the sewage discharge that will have gone in with those torrential downpours, however.

Fished the river Creedy this morning at the top end, not much happening but managed half a dozen or so smallish fish mainly on dries. Nice to get back out and nice to see a decent amount of water. Just a shame that the rain didn't affect all our rivers the same.

Chris, the really good news is that it won’t be long before we see more of your cracking YouTube videos. With regard to other rivers seeing some fresh water it would seem Dartmoor is a bit sponge like at the moment as the west dart has barely risen at all. Early days I guess. Glad you are out again, I seem to have lost my mojo at the moment.

I found similar Chris. I popped out yesterday and looked for rising fish but there were very few. There was a spluttering of caddis but that was it.
Was pleasing to feel cooler water on my legs though.

Chris that “just as it happens” approach is what is so appealing about your vids. I feel like your addressing the viewer personally and there is no bloody moronic music that so many people seemed to insist on in their videos. I thought your moaning and swearing was very subdued considering what we put up with these days. I read this morning that a large percentage of sewage outlet monitors are either faulty or not even installed and we are expected to go along with this crap. Apart from anglers and a few other water users no one seems to really care anymore. Now that’s what I call moaning. Rant over.

That was some fish that missed your fly Chris! Keep those vids coming, hopefully more action in the next few weeks as the water cools and we get a drop or two of the wet stuff. I have re-proofed the leak in an unfortunate part of my waders in anticipation of another outing or two...

Sounds like the start of a compilation series Terry, will there be a "now that's what I call moaning 2"? 😀 I seem to have had a fair number of these rises this year Johhny, fish just exploding on the fly but I can't connect no matter how I time the strike? Perhaps they're just not properly fooled, who knows.
