Just watched Halfstoned’s last you tube video, really good watch as usual. I used to comment on his videos via this forum but this forum seems to be dead on its feet. Everyday it seems we have numerous guest but zero members. Have you all lost interest or is it now not worth the effort to post. In a vain effort to resurrect what we once had can I appeal to all former members to give it another go. It might just brighten up the season so far. My season so at as been at best non existent to crap. Terry

To quote the limbless knight from the Holy Grail, I'm not dead yet Terry! No posts from me to date because I haven't even wetted a line in Devon yet (put off by low temperatures and high water), but like you I have been keenly watching Chris' videos. I did manage my first outing last week to a small chalk stream and actually landed one nice little wild fish on an emerger, but it was hard going. Horrid gusty downstream wind and a river that was much higher and faster than usual at this time of year. Hoping to give Dartmoor a crack in the next few weeks. Tight lines!

It would be nice to see some reports back on the forum Terry, I always used it as a way to keep track of what was happening where. I had my first trip on the little moorland stream this afternoon, lots of spots were unfishable because of the water height but still managed to connect with a few of the smaller inhabitants. No giant 10 inchers unfortunately but a lovely place to while away the hours. The bluebells were out in force this time last year but they looked at least another week away from "showtime ". Spring is definitely dragging its heels this year.

Thank you for posting maybe we have turned a corner. A special thanks to the knights that said Ni. Would the search for a shrubbery put an end to this east wind.

Yes Terry BUT what is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow in this East wind?

Nice to see a few posts and if you want, I'll keep the forum open but as you know, I've been thinking of closing it for a while.
I think, as is the case with many forums, that they have fallen in popularity since social media (for good or bad) entered our lives.
I have seen far bigger forums struggle and thy are creating creative ways to make it appear that the amount of clicks is far greater than they actually are for the purposes of ad revenues.
While this is of no relevance to our little forum I do think it is just how things are these days but like I said, if you'd still like it lets keep forging ahead.
Personally it has been a mixed bag, literally, from a fishing perspective. The main part of the river where I fish has been too high to fish for trout but is getting close to a nice level, I managed to hook a salmon there that was off after a couple of minutes but we at least got a look at it. I've been fishing the Moors a bit and am just in and it was OK this morning and I'll head down to the Taw to see if anything is happening with Mays tomorrow. I was lucky enough to fish Chew for pike a couple of weeks ago and got lucky with a nice fish and am also developing a nasty mullet habit!

Thanks for the update Pete, I thought that might be the case. It would be good if the Forum could chug along for a bit longer! I find it interesting and informative to check in every now and then, and I hope that our posts as a community will help newcomers to the sport or the area to find their feet and develop some confidence on the Devon waters. I am itching to have a go on the Moor in the near future, but meanwhile I was extremely lucky to have had a very exciting short trip to the west coast of Ireland earlier this month. We spent two afternoons on a remote 'machair' lough (shell sand bottom, close to the sea) in perfect conditions, fishing first from the bank and then from a tiny leaky inflatable boat. Maybe my best spell of wild trout fishing ever: we had more than 20 fish to two rods, best pushing 2lbs. Strong silvery fish, fought like seatrout in the shallow water with lots of jumps and runs. Floating lines and traditional wet flies. My partner proved the advantage of fluorocarbon over my trusty Maxima in the very clear water. I reluctantly swapped my tippet, with an instant effect on positive takes and hook-ups.

No worries John, like I say, I am happy to keep it running but it would be nice to have some more regular posts from members, myself included.
Your trip sounds amazing, the fish too. Good to hear the change up in tippet worked a treat.
I had look at the spot where I fish most yesterday. Mainly to see if there were any mayfly about or even some rising fish. It still had a push to it and there wasn't much happening. I'll keep watching and am hoping soon something might happen!

Got out once last week. As the first outing for well over six months, I stayed close to home and tried the stretch of the Exe just below Tiverton.
Enjoyment clouded by the fact that, in my haste to get in the river, I scraped the car on the garage doorpost!
Still cloudy and still lots of ware coming down.
The very bad floods in the winter seemed to have filled in all the deeper sections, so now a uniform, shallow, fast flowing section- not the best! Used to have a lot of variety so in various water heights there were still places to put a fly.
Needless to say, no hatch, no signs of fish, no nibbles to dry or nymph.
However, as age is weighing heavy, a new set of boot foot, breathable waist waders did the job. Cheapies, and the welly bit is quite thin. This, as I stagger around in my dotage, is useful as it gives me some feel of what I'm stepping on and thus some idea of how secure (or not) my verticality is!

Paul, good to see you back on the forum and great that you made it out after 6 months. I share you age concerns as this year ( not too exciting so far ) I seem to be struggling more than I expected. The large rocks that I used to easily step over on the boulder strewn runs on the Dartmoor streams seem to have much larger gaps between them this year. I guess the winter floods have moved them so it may not be me.😒 I would be very keen to know the make of your new wader set up as a boot foot option sounds a good idea to me. It may be of no consultation but as my old dad would say “we are all getting older at the same rate” Tight lines, Terry

I got to fish the bit of river that I usually do for the first time this year as it has been too high to fish for rising trout.
I spotted a few mays hatching while I tied on my tippet amongst Yellow Sallies, brook duns, caddis, midges and yellow mays.
I had to wait and walk a bit to find some rising trout but did in the end. I caught a couple on mays and found a fish on the far bank gently sipping emergers that, after a few fly changes, I managed to catch.
It's been a while but I have really enjoyed it.

Hoping this year that we get some rain every so often through the season… I’ve hardly fished mid-July & august the last 2 years. Been out on the Frome/ Piddle and Axe / Yarty regularly the last month, and attended the Monnow social. Had a bit a disaster at the Monnow weekend, on the Sunday I must have dropped my main dry fly box… 140 or so CDC emergers, split wings, olive uprights etc….. I enjoy tying a few replacement flies over the winter, finding time to re-tie a whole box in May sucks😂

Haven’t got very far yet… new tacky box delivered, and about 20 flies already tied as replacement to add to those shown in the box… feel it won’t be completed until April24…

I'm a beginner so I hope this board still carries on. At the moment I'm busy reading through looking for hints and tips.

Is anybody getting out in these conditions? Have you all switched to evening fishing already? Oh for a nice mild cloudy May day with a bit of drizzle, anyone remember those?

Not me I’m afraid Chris. With the weather as it is I can’t summon up enough interest in going at any time at the moment. Must overcome this apathy as the season will be half over soon. There is a faint chance of a small front coming in after next week which could bring some rain. Just in time for the start of the ashes series.

I’ve not been out in the last week… but have 4 days fishing in Wales, Thurs- Sunday, next week… couple of days on the Monnow, one on the Teifi and the final day to be decided….. excited about the Teifi, a new river to me, 8 miles plus to explore, so will need a return visit as 8 miles in a day would be ambitious😂

Hi I have lurked for a few years on this board but don’t think I’ve posted ! Have picked up all kinds of tips along the way and have enjoyed but not commented on Chris,s videos to my shame lol So far although there are no bad days on the river it’s been pretty dire haven’t seen a fish rising !! I will persevere and if I can get a hall pass will try a few evenings. Hope you all have a better season going forward G
