I've now had a few outings on the Yeo this season and only once have I encountered rising fish. Is it just me or is this a really slow start to the year, very little fly life and very few risers. It seems we've gone straight from flooding into clear skies and north easterly winds. We're never satisfied are we!!

No it’s not just you Chris. I’ve only had 2 or 3 trips up on the moor so far but the lack of any rising fish despite some pretty decent fly life has been very noticeable. Each time I’ve been plagued with either an east or northeast wind and bright sun which doesn’t help but even so for this time of year I’d expect to see at least a few rises.

I was on the Yeo last weekend and found exactly the same, barely a rising fish to be seen anywhere. Plenty of B Gnats about but very few Olives. It's been the same everwhere I have fished. In fact I can't remember the last time I found plenty of fish on the fin anywhere☹

That's exactly it Ben, any theories? Cold spring? High water through April? Perhaps black gnats don't taste like they used to? (To much slurry added to these ones).

Hard to say, but let's hope it picks up. It would be nice to just put a dry on and leave it there!

Same here cant find a rise, did see a few mays coming off today on the Yeo but the only thing interested in them were the wagtails, picked up one nice 12 incher fishing blind amongst the trash dams at Dunscombe but that was it ,didn't see a rise all day, went to top of Creedy on the way home just to have a look same story watched a few pools for a while, nothing moving but it's still carrying a lot of colour.

Spent Monday morning on the Yeo in the company of Paul a new club member. In truth we probably spent more time chatting than fishing but the river was really quiet in terms of fly life and rising fish. Paul had a few on a nymph under a yarn indicator but my dry fly only managed two fish. However I popped back out above Dunscombe in the evening until 7.30 (it got a bit cold) and had a few fish blind casting a mixture of Mayfly and sedge and had my first 12" fish of the season. These conditions of bright skies and easterly winds are proving somewhat challenging

Had a couple of hours on the Yeo today, and I did actually manage to find some rising fish. They looked to be on Black Gnats, but weren't too keen on my offering, so I switched to Mayfly which was taken confidently by nearly all the fish I covered. An Otter came down through one pool, and I thought that would be it, but they were back up in a couple of minutes!

Saw your van there Ben so I went downstream, only saw one rise and that was to my fly but the fish threw the hook. The rest of the stretch was absolutely dead. Ended up pulling a streamer to get two fish. I'd already spent the morning on the Taw, loads of fly life about but again very little rising. A total of seven hours on two different rivers for half a dozen trout, never known it so dour. Which pool was it Ben, I might go and set up camp

I've fished downstream a couple of times this season and found it dead as well, Chris. Haven't tried the Taw yet.

It's a very patchy season, only place I've found some risers is above salmon hutch. Dare I say it after the wet April but the Taw could do with some rain.

Fished 3 horseshoes yesterday afternoon for a couple of hours, not expecting much in the blazing sun but it was surprisingly productive, nothing of any size but fish on the dry, so I'll take that! Walking back to the van, flushed a Buzzard off a Pigeon which it must have just caught as there was blood everywhere and the Pigeon was warm. Didn't know they took these.

What a difference a bit of rain can make ! I fished the Yeo, upstream from Dunscombe on Thursday last week, after some showers the day before. Although there were still not very many rising fish about, that’s a whole lot better than none ! And it turned out that those that were rising were of a good size – from a total of nine, the best were 11, 2 x 12, and 15 inches (pictured).

Nice fish Roy, I thought that was your vehicle in the car park, I drove over to the Creedy instead and had a few fish but nothing of that size 👍

I always feel a bit awkward following another angler up the beat just in case they've earmarked a fish that they wish to return to. But now you've offered Roy don't be surprised if I appear on the bank and start bothering you😄😄 out of interest what was the successful pattern?

Thanks Ben. Chris, you would always be welcome, just don't creep up too stealthily behind me ! All taken on dries, mostly (including the 15 incher) on a rather fluffy white CDC emerger of my own creation (so fluffy and scruffy !) - chosen partly because there were a few Mayflies about (although I didn't see one taken), but mainly so I could see it more easily amongst the foam ! Sadly, I lost the fly on a tree later.

You can't miss it Chris, its the tree with a scruffy, fluffy fly stuck in it.
