No rain forecast for another week, I popped to a local river late last week in the eve to check the water temp… 21.5C☹️ Wye and Usk have stopped fishing for salmonids on numerous beats, Gwent angling have stopped fishing… 3rd year in a row I have stopped fishing due to water temps, with projected climate change temp rises you have to fear for the long term health of salmonid rivers in lowland England. If you haven’t got a thermometer for fishing you really should get one, the only time really viable on many rivers at the moment is dawn; last season I took the temp at 5am and it was 65f, by 8.30am it was already 69f, which is my cut off for any fishing. Although when temps rise so quickly by early morning I don’t fish at all and leave them alone, seems sensible to leave them undisturbed for the few hrs where they aren’t under stress.
Very worrying trends😏

Very true Rain predicted tonight and into next week for the West Country but we’ve been expecting it for a few days now.

Yeah, some tonight that I hadn’t spotted, but 5 hrs is about 5 days less then required, but a welcome start🙂

My area appears to be ring fenced with regard to any serious rain, just a sprinkling last night. Maybe get lucky next week. Disturbing report this morning with regard to sea temps. around the UK. It appears they have suddenly risen to 4 deg. C above normal for this time of year and the scientists are baffled. I can’t help feeling we are going to have some seriously hot weather to come. Hope I’m wrong.

Plenty rain recently, and more to come. Good or bad for river trouting?! I will make another foray this weekend to see if things have changed for the better

The Dartmoor streams have been transformed by last week’s floods. Levels still well above normal, gravel clean and sparkling, and the trout at last cooperative despite lack of an obvious hatch. No doubt some sea trout will have moved up to the moorland beats.

As soon as my calf is up to it I must get up onto Dartmoor, haven’t been except to Fernworthy early season when all the rivers were blown out… just a bit worried it may be next season, Dartmoor streams are probably my worst option locally for ‘wading or rock/bog hopping’ with a dodgy leg😏
Is east East / West Dart you mostly fish on Dartmoor or others?

I hope your leg will be up to some adventures on the Moor this season. Plenty of time yet! I fish all over the system, the location determined by water levels and more importantly, wind strength and direction. As you know, the banks and riverbed are pretty unforgiving except perhaps on the Blackbrook which is the only section where I would dispense with my wading staff. It’s saved me from certain disaster elsewhere, and I’m even considering whether to start wearing a life jacket now that I’m into my 7th decade and a bit less steady on my pins than in the past!

I must get to the Blackabrook… I’ve never quite made it when fishing up the West Dart, the only times I’ve fished past the confluence with the West Dart I didn’t have time for the detour

The lower section can be really good in an olive hatch. If you don’t want to walk in from Prince Hall, an alternative access point is to park in the lay-by just above Oakery road bridge over the river near Princetown, then contour along the Devonport Leat (loads of interesting insects and nice views of the valley below) until you reach the track down to Bachelor’s Hall and the river. From there you can either follow the path next to the fence to get down to the confluence with the W Dart or pick your way along the river bank, but that takes a lot longer and can be awkward in the bogs and tussocks. I would avoid fishing the top section between the Bachelor Hall footbridge and the road. Very uncomfortable wading and scrambling at the end of the day and I’ve never caught a thing there! Better just to retrace your steps to the parking place I think. Good luck and let us know if you do get up there this season.

Cheers… I’ll try and get out and give it a go early Sept… make a long day, dawn to dusk (not so long in Sept😂) and fish up from Princehall
