Anyone read or reading this newish book from Hayes and Stazicker?
An interesting follow on from previous books and some really interesting thoughts on what the trout can see. I particularly like the attention to how the life stages of flies are seen by fish and what detail fish are likely to see. Useful to compare to which of the flies you use most/successfully meet the general thread of the book.
The last couple of years I’ve used a cripple designed by Kelly Galloup a lot, which requires you to bend the hook…. When I’ve mentioned to a couple of people the hook bending really concerns them, but It’s a great fish catcher (hooks up really well as trout take it so confidently)and definitely mimics some of the behaviour discussed in the book…

Thanks for sharing Boisker. I'm pleased the flies are working. I tied some up when I read the book but never used them.
They also talk about a pop-up fly and a friend and I were recently using the Lafontaine Caddis in a similar way by just letting the leader sink, giving the fly a pull and letting it sink and come back up again. It worked really well!
We recently had a magazine do in Bakewell (don't ask me about the Lathkill, it was one of the most challenging but exciting streams I've fished!) and I had Peter and Don say a few words about the book and their findings. It was fascinating as they back up every theory with hard fact. They are looking at things in great depth that is questioning many established theories.

Hi Pete… I’ve carried the pop up fly since reading the previous books, I occasionally use it, but haven’t found it any better than my usual cdc emerger with the pearly butt… the times I have found it better I’ve never been sure whether it’s due to the smaller size of wing or the ‘pop up’.
Annoyingly having not fished due to water temps for a few weeks, then busy at work…. I was just gearing up to take some time off over a few weeks for some focussed fishing time when I tore my calf muscle quite badly….. playing in a 6 aside cricket tournament… I knew I was too old😂
10 days later, ankle & calf still swollen and my ankle is a remarkable shade of black and blue….
So, at least I’ll have a fully stocked and tidy fly box by the time I can fish again… bugger all else to do!
I’m gonna try a couple of things in the book, not the full fly, rather using some of the suggestions to tweak my normal flies.
When I get up and about again I’ll give you a shout and see if you are free…. A not so new (new last season) stickman rod for you to try and no doubt some new styles and poorly tied flies😂

I hear some great things. It feels like the clock is speeding up on this season already!
