Hello, I am coming to the Devon region for the first and understand there are some lovely locations to fish.
I was hoping someone might have a recommendations for a resource/ website that could help me with the type of fishing and equipment I should bring? Was going to throw in a 9ft 5wt but thinking might be bit long? Anything of help on entomology and flys to bring?
Not looking for any secret spots but recommendations for beautiful rivers/locations (as catching fish is always a bonus), would be greatly appreciated. Is access generally public or more private?
I am an avid fly fisher, based in NY and generally target trout. Happy to return the favour if anyone comes this way.
Many thanks in advance for any help

Duchy waters on Dartmoor are great… small average fish size but beautiful wild brown trout in a stunning location… West Country angling passport, lists a whole load of beats across Devon to try westcountryangling.com/wap-fishing-beats/ The website and app seem to have some issues this week, I’ve emailed them to find out when resolved. Flies… if you are fishing for trout in the US I have no doubt the same flies will work over here… I tend to use CDC emergers, upright CDC duns, Griffiths gnat, Adams, X caddis, crane flies will be useful over the next few weeksetc…. I probably fish a 16-18 most, some 14’s and down to 22’s; nymphs again any baetis, caddis etc 14-20. You can go smaller or larger as well🙂. Generally I don’t think the fish mind what fly…. As most places just sort of match the general Size, colour, state (emerger, dun, spinner etc) in pretty much any pattern will no doubt work. Occasionally throw small streamers… although probably not the huge Kelly Galloup double hook ‘sex dungeon’ types… When are you heading over and do you know where you are heading? if I am free I’d be happy to meet up and take you out to club or syndicate waters for a day or so… Cheers Matt

Access to fishing here is nearly all private or Club. For the majority of water, I think a 7 0r 8 ft 3 to 4 weight would suit you better than the 9 footer. Depending on where you are based you should have a few options.

Hi Bugchaser.
There is already some great suggestions here regarding locations and tackle. The small, overgrown streams are perfect for small rods in the ranges listed above and bigger, more open rivers, your 9ft rod will work.
If you can give us an idea of where you are staying we can come up with some more ideas although Dartmoor is a must visit place.

Thank you all.
Unfortunately I massively underestimated my wife’s expectations for this holiday and waders and rods were removed from luggage!
Hopefully back solo at some stage!
If any of you folks come to target trout in NE, more than happy to return all the kind offers here.
