Had a nice day today despite the sun! I was supposed to have been going wed/thurs but ended up on the river today instead.
I started at Two bridges entering the river under the bridge at 9.30am and fished till 5.30pm and I ended up very high up on the moors and the fishing just seemed to get better the further i went .
I had started off with a CDC Elk pattern in size 16 and that produced a lot of missed takes and a fair number of netted Browns before changing over to a size 16 Terrestial pattern similar to Paul Proctors APT pattern.
This really seemed to turn them on and had hits almost every pool .
Despite the bright hot sun the trout were game today and were coming up for the fly from their hidey holes amongst the rocks to grab the fly . I saw several of the takes as the trout came up from the bottom in the clear pools , often in the slower deeper pools they investigated the fly very slowly and carefully before coming back and committing ,very interesting to watch.
I had an encounter with what looked like a very good fish in one particular pool the fly just drifted under an overhang and a big head appeared slashed at the fly before diving back to its lair, a very good fish noted for next time!!
I stopped fishing at 5.30pm worn out and aware that I had to now walk back to the car across the moor and then drive back to Wiltshire!!
I ended up with over 30 netted Browns I stopped counting then but it was maybe 33/34 plus untold misses and early releases!
One particular fish maybe worth mentioning as it was one of the better ones came after I had hooked and lost 2 and missed a few quick takes all in one small pool and even after all that disturbance I still then hooked and landed another good fish. Sometimes worth sticking with a pool for a bit .
Anyway hopefully will get back again before seasons end.
