Work has been manic and it dawned on me that I hadn't cast a fly for trout for over a month. I popped the 2wt in the truck and headed off at just before 10.
The spot of the Taw I chose is pretty enclosed so the sun is off of the water and as I stepped in it is always nice to be greeted with a rising fish!
Despite covering him I though I'd head for some slightly faster water where I thought more fish would hold. I was fishing the scruffy klink with a pheasant tail hung off NZ style. I picked up a few fish in the 6 to 7 inch range and then saw the dry dip. This was a better fish.
He was living just off of the cow parsley
I carried on upstream where the fishing was pretty consistent but all fish bar one coming to the nymph.
I had loads to do when I got back but the fishing was too good to leave. I worked into a shallow run and couldn't believe the fish I saw just sitting in 8 inches of water. I cast to him and it was a few inches too far to the right. Next cast was right over him and he took! This boy knew exactly what he was doing and headed up into the flow but I managed to coax him back down again and brought him back down towards me. I thought he was mine but seeing me he headed down a bit further and tried to wrap me on a tree root. I managed to give him some side strain and keep him out. We made eye contact on more than one occassion and I reckon I had him on for about 20 to 25 seconds before he just shook came loose. I just stood there not really knowing what to do and then just laughed. I would have loved a photo of him but stalking him and getting him to take was just about enough. It is a brown I won't forget in a hurry though!
