HI,
New to this so be kind. After many years tackling many aspects of angling and moving all over Europe I have now settled in sunny Devon (Plympton). After much research and many blanks sea fishing, I have decided to get a permit for the Plym, specifically for sea trout fishing. Due to work and family time will be limited and the evening/night will be the best time. Is there anyone on here who fish the Plym regularly, specifically spinning, and would be willing to give some advice? I am also looking for anyone who wouldn't mind someone tagging along for a fish, not too confident about fishing after dark alone.
Anyway sorry for all the questions, hope someone can help.
Dan

Welcome Dan So lets get this right, after lots of blank trips sea fishing you thought sea trout fishing might be more productive I have only fished the Plym a handfull of times years ago for salmon in November/December so I can't give you up to date local knowledge. Sandy, who posts on here occasionally, might be more help if he sees this. For sea trout spinning in clear water use mepps in sizes 2 or 3 and cast upstream into the pool heads and reel back fast or small plugs cast across or downstream. I find clear water spinning better early in the morning rather than in the evenings. In big coloured water step up the size of spinner (I like a small flying C) or plug and fish the pool tails. Night fishing with the fly is really the way to go in low clear water though. It's not half as frightening as you think... usually ;D Andy

Hi Dan, First apologies for slow reply - and welcome to the Forum. Which Club on the Plym did you join? Most of the Seatrout on the Plym are fished for at night on the Fly. I have seldom seen serious Anglers using the spinners for anything but the Salmon late on in the year. One of my club members is in the Plymouth and District(treasurer) who have quite a few Seatrout officianados, if your keen I'll see if I can get him on here and maybe arrange some meet on the water. I mainly fish the lower stretches and the Brackish tidal waters with the Fly - its the way we did it in my youth on Scottish islands and still do . Always has amused me how saltw*ter fly has been seen as something new . If you would like to meet up and have a go at that it might prove worthwhile. Mind you I don't keep my catch for anything but a quick photo but you mighyt pick up a bass or two as well. Top time for the Seatrout on the Plym is June if there has been a spate or two (not a poblem the last couple of years). A good place to start out would be above Plym Bridge around the Weir and the pools/glides above that. Some good fish always lie in this area and I've seen a couple of Glass cabinet examples there, - they are seldom caught . Let me know how things are going and perhaps we can share some water together. Sandy.
