I went for a couple of hours yesterday and decided to go looking for something a little bigger. Recently it has been "twitters" or small trout on the dry or on nymphs. I stuck a small spindle tube fly tied with hair and marabou and managed to find and release 3 trout all bigger than 10 inches. The largest was an absolute classic Exe brownie fat colourful and absolutely beautiful. Lost another that stayed for several minutes but didn't come to the surface seemed a lot bigger - but not sure as I didn't see it.
Saw the kingfisher a couple of times, the dippers were out and about, long tailed tits in the trees. rescued a bat from a piece of line that someone had tangled into a tree....
Seemed like a result to me ;D ;D ;D ;D

Good stuff Clive. Anything which sorts out the better trout is worth knowing about, how big are these tube flies? How are you fishing them?

Spindle tubes are like cone heads joined to brass tubes. I have them in a number of sizes, at the top or largest or heaviest size fish them from a spinning rod...... the smaller ones I use on a fly rod. There was an article about them in Salmon and Trout magazine when there was only the heavy ones...... now there is a complete range of sizes.
The one that I was using was about 1/2 long (smallest size I think) I tied them with a bit of hair and something to give it a bit of sparkle. I like a dark top and lighter bottom something like a small fish. I don't have a pattern in mind just make them up using tube flies and Clouser ties for inspirations . This pattern has white deer hair at the base then brown in middle and white and red marabou on top to give some life. Total length about 1 1/4 inches. I then fish them a little like a wet fly or devon minnow - cast above where I think the fish is, allow to sink, and work back. I am usually trying to represent a small fry.
Doesn't always work about keeping "twitters" at bay but tends to wipe out the really small stuff. Tried again this weekend with another but this time with twisted blue and silver lureflash type stuff on the top - managed to find my first rainbow (escapee of 16 - 18 inches) of the season out of the Exe. This is my favourite colour combination and my most successful spindle fly
