I am thinking about applying for the licence for the salmon water controlled by Exeter City Council. Has anyone any experience of this water on the Exe. Is it any good or worth a go? Can you also fish for trout as there seems to be plenty about? (I fish the Countess Wear section for chub etc on my Exeter Assn licence. You always seem to catch 50/50 trout for coarse fish!) Any advice is appreciated.

Never fished it - but would guess that all the salmon caught further up the river must have swum through it to get to Exmoor and spawn

I am thinking of buying the council ticket but might just buy the day tickets available at Exeter Angling. I am also a member of the Exeter + District and have fished The Countess Wear section for mullet.Using a worm baited mepps I have not only caught mullet but also chub, perch and a number of bass up to 4 1/2 lb. One day while practicing our spey casting, with only a piece of red wool on the end, my friend caught a pike of about 5lb . Its a nice bit of river to practice on with the benefit of casting from the right bank on the outgoing tide and left bank on the incoming without moving. Colin.
