Can't seem to post pictures any bigger than this. Anyway this is the remains of a sea trout about 3lb that was on some foliage near the spawning redds. Probably an otters interrupted meal which disappeared the next day. Colin.

Billy great reports from the little river Sid, keep them coming. Do you know how far the sea trout/salmon go once you have lifted them over the weir? I guess the numbers aren't that great so they could soon spread out vanish right up the system. Keep up the good work!

After the rain of last night there appeared on the redds a cock salmon in the region of 5 lb. There were a couple of brownies around that he chased away. It will be great to see a hen salmon turn up in the next few weeks. Colin.

Hope they haven't been down overnight as it isn't there this morning. He probably got fed up waiting for a mate to turn up. Half a dozen Browns there . Colin.

Last netting operation for the year this morning. Disappointing as conditions were good. Still managed to put 7 brownies over the weir making a seasons total of 93 fish. This is a very worthwhile operation as it gives more fish chance to spawn as well as taking the pressure off the redds below the weir. Cheers and merry Christmas to all our readers. Colin.

I had the pleasure of meeting up with Colin today and amongst many other things got the walk the Sid with him. I noticed there was a pic of the weir a few posts above which is frankly, impossible or rather impassable for fish.

I've seen this thing for myself and it is a total blocker. I imagine that if it was removed the upstream erosion would be a major issue. Is there any talk of getting a fishpass put on it? If it wasn't so bloody steep and didn't have that curve over the sill something as simple as a diagonal baulk would help. The Sid isn't much smaller than the Coly (Axe trib at Colyton) and that always got a very good run of peal. If the weir could be made passable it would transform the Sid.

I managed a project looking at the Sid two years ago, instream survey including tribs and we commissioned a short technical report on the weir options. Long story short, you could put in a fishpass, but it would be costly.... Made more so by the lack of room. To construct one that meets current design briefs would be over £100k, it would be amazing to see it happen. Unfortunately the cost for the amount of upstream river it would open up (for anyone who doesn't know the Sid it is a very short river with a tiny catchment) means it is probably unlikely to happen.... Maybe one day, we can only hope!

Few fish starting to show on the Sid. I fished from the Ford up to the weir and caught one and moved another half dozen. Bit rusty at the moment. Colin

Walking Lola in the Byes today I saw lots of brownies rising freely. They know when the season is over. Never mind ,I'm up on the Avon next Wednesday and the Test a week later on the Thursday. Hopefully the weather will stay good for us to tempt a few grayling. Colin.
