Took up Mike Willis' offer of a river walk on this beat today. For some reason, I've never been to the Culm, despite it being the closest of the CFFC waters to me.
Mike and Ben Dymoke-Marr, together with half a dozen others met up at Skinner's Farm at 09:45 and we had a comprehensive introduction to the water. It's a lovely river and I can't believe that I haven't fished it before. Mike had indicated that we could bring our kit and wet a fly so myself and Jonathan (didn't catch the surname but a complete gent) suited up and we all set off. It was still pretty cold but we saw the odd riser and the great thing about the downstream section is that it's one of the few CFFC rivers designed for us left-handers. I had a few casts on the way back to Skinner's Farm and was delighted to raise a couple of fish. Heck, when you get to 50, there isn't much that can make you laugh out loud but a rising fish still does it for me.
After lunch, we had a look at the upstream section. A different sort of water, more tree cover but still pretty. Jonathan got in and had his first fish of the season - well done! I was less successful. Despite some excellent coaching from the bank, courtesy of Mike and Ben, I still managed to fail to connect with possibly the daftest fish in the river, which continually rose confidently in front of me, despite getting lined. Congratulations due to Mike and Ben for not saying stuff along the lines of 'FFS, Jon, he's right there, you can practically reach over and lift him out with your hand'. ;D
So, a great day and many thanks to Mike and Ben for their time. All we need is a small rise in temperature and the season will be really underway.
