Anyone been out yet? Might just be warming up there by now.
Does anyone know about fishing on the higher sections of some rivers on the moor, like the North Teign above Fernworthy Forest, or the Taw above Sticklepath, or the West and East Okement rivers above Meldon etc? Not sure if its crown land. Not sure I'll ever bother either but curiosity and a sense of adventure may get the better of me eventually!

Hi Rubble,
Thinking about Dartmoor this weekend funnily enough. I love the water above Meldon it looks really nice.
I have been doing some homework for fishing further up the Taw and have found some info below Sticklepath that will involve a little bit of door knocking but above Sticklepath seems to be unclear to those in the know I have asked.
A long held dream of mine is to catch a trout from the Taw as far up as I can manage.

There fish rising on the WD last Friday evening, it's been a bit slow up to then. Might have another wander up there this Friday to see if any sea trout have arrived yet.
The East Okement seems a bit thin above Simmons Park, and I'm not a huge fan of being quite so on display to fish the stretches in the park itself. The West Okement by the castle is better for me, and there are plenty of small brownies in there too. I've not fished above the reservoir, the water immediately below it looks to have something wrong with it.
Funnily enough, I was wondering about the Taw around the The Tors, I don't know who would own the rights, but if the two branches of the Okement on Dartmoor are ok to fish...

Hi Guys, I'm living on South Uist now but I look in now and then to see what' what When I was down your way I had a plan to fish the upper reaches of the Taw, Tavy, Okements etc. I know Mike Weaver wrote an article in which he said the upper reaches of the Walkham were on the Duchy ticket. in another article long ago in T&S someone wrote about fishing all the other rivers high on the moor using the Duchy ticket. Despite asking here there and everywhere (including the Duchy office) I never got an answer - nobody seemed to have a clue or even any interest. I wish now I'd just gone on and fished it (with a Duchy ticket). It is all Duchy land and anyway who is ever going to ask to see your ticket up there? If anyone does ever give it a go please post some pictures on here, I do miss the little quick rivers and little quick trout of Devon Andy

As I understand it, the upper River Tavy is owned by the MOD.
Several years ago I was speaking to someone quite high up in the military who looked after the ranges. He said that they owned the fishing rights in Tavy Cleave and the Jewells leat which feeds off it. He also mentioned that they were thinking of charging people to fish there.
I guess they could also own the upper Taw if it falls within their military firing ranges. I must admit that I thought that the Duchy owned all of Dartmoor but perhaps the military own small portions ?
