I fished the Taw Mill beat yesterday and for the first time spotted a salmon. Sadly it was slightly diseased but nevertheless was making valiant efforts to move upstream. It was just below the gabions about 200m downstream of car park. This appears quite early for a Taw salmon to be so far upstream. Is this normal?

Hi GN Normally you would have not seen this fish, had it been in good condition it would found a lie in deeper water out of sight, so we could have runs that we miss, nobody fishes for them at this time of year on our water or in general. Unfortunately this fish is doomed. I saw a very large Sea Trout in the same condition a couple of years ago, always sad. Salmon have been reported on the Fox & Hounds water for the last few weeks, so it is likely that a few have made it up.
