I headed over to Dorset to take some pictures of salmon fishing on the Frome. Really interesting to see and a great day. Barle Blanker if you're reading this I hear it was your old stomping ground!

I treated myself to a day on the Frome today, I know it's pricey so unfortunately it's a once a year day out. I seem to be stacked every weekend for the next few weeks so on Saturday morn I took a chance and booked a beat at Wrackleford on the assumption that the forecast rain for Saturday would have run off by today. It still had a tiny bit of colour in it, but had dropped right back to the levels of Friday. It was a great call, I had an outstanding day, probably my best days fishing so far. A 50/50 mix of stocked and wbt all on the dry- stockies up to 2.5lb and a wild of around 1.5 lb and a couple couple close to the lb mark and lots around 10"; it was def one of those rare days where everything I tried seemed to work and even when I over gassed a cast, trying to get right up against the bank, the current just slowly pulled it free..... If only all days were like that! Mid- afternoon through to about 5.30 mayfly were pouring off and fish (stockies and wild) jumping all over the river, I need to earn more.... One day a year isn't enough!

Had an evening ticket at the dairy house on the frome this eve, beautiful stretch of water, no stocking, so all wild and all C&R. Some good fish showing al eve, but I always find chalk streams challenging, nothing rising early eve and they didn't like my nymphs- plenty of follows but no takes. Then late on in the eve found a large brown... Tried nymphs to no avail, as a sedge hatch was trickling along tried a small sedge, he looked but wouldn't take. So swapped to a small midge type pattern and on the 2nd cast up he came, lovely slow take and off he went. 19 inch fat brown landed a good few minutes later. My best wild brown so far, a great eve out.

First trip of the season to the Frome... And coincided with the first time it has felt like spring this season (I've had some tough, cold sessions on the Axe). Good hatch of LDO's and March Browns through the day, managed to pretty much stay on the dry. Ended up with 10 fish.... Including three trout of around 1.5lb and a Grayling close to 2lb.... The grayling sneaked in on the act, came up from a deeper dark run when I was casting a nymph to a trout.... Bumped a number of fish off as well.... All in all a fantastic day.... Hopefully a sign for the season.... (No doubt I'll blank tomorrow!)

Popped over to the Frome today, after a arranging a last minute day off. Had a few nice fish, but most memorable was a huge LDO hatch for about 3 hrs the males we swarming all over the river, there was also a few March Browns but not in any great numbers. Local farmer said yesterday there was a huge grannom hatch, but here was none today; but still no sign of hawthorns, any one had any hawthorns out yet?

There were a smattering on the Western edge of the moor last weekend, and around Launceston. Seen a few more this week and was Eastward Weds / Thurs (like Kent and Sussex eastward) where there were shedloads. Love Hawthorn/Heather fly time. Always brings the moorland fish up

Great day on the Frome today south of Dorchester, but a strange start to the day. Arrived about 10am, sun out nice and warm, no wind and mayflies trickling off... Fish already rising up and down the river..... Proceeded to have a very frustrating 2 hrs.. loads of takes but they all kept bumping off. The sun then disappeared and the wind kicked in, temp noticeably dropped and I thought I may have seen the best of the day... but the mayfly hatch increased and some how my casting kicked into gear and coped well with the wind... Some lovely casts right up against the rushes and under vegetation (makes a change from over shooting and sending the fly hurling into the bankside veg!)... I ended up with some really nice fish, a mix of some larger stocked fish but even better some great wild fish just over the 1lb mark...

Decided to have an afternoon off today and popped over to the Frome below Dorchester. Arrived about 2pm, not really expecting much until the evening but the last two times I've gone to this beat after work it already had two people on it so I'd had to go to another beat.... So thought I'd bag a spot early. Started fishing and proceeded to have a slightly 'backward' but successful day. Overcast conditions, 20C and for one of the few times this year practically no wind, but no sign of flies in any numbers.... The odd small upwing and a few mayflies swanning about. Started at the bottom of the beat, first pool/glide 4 fish in about 8 casts- largest 21" down to 15", 2 were definitely stocked but in amongst them was a stunning 18" wbt; around the bend and into a short stretch of riffle and the smooth laminar flow... 5 more fish all over 13". So fishing just over an hour and 9 fish. Then it went really quiet for a couple of hours apart from two more Browns... funny- conditions still the same, felt the same but nothing doing.
Had a break, smoking and watching the river. Started further up the beat and had 5 grayling to about 1/2 pound, really nice fish in great condition.
Had another mooch around taking a break just looking at the river trying to spot rising fish, but nothing really moving.
So after the day I had I nearly went home about 6.30 pm, but the thought of the evening rise was too tempting after a very good early afternoon.... 3.5 hrs later and nothing... Sedges about, but not in massive numbers, loads of small Gnat types but apart from small splashy rises there wasn't much happening. Just about to go home when I spotted a huge back porpoising in a short and not very deep pool, this would definitely beat my 3lb pb, tried sedges, small emerger type CDC thing, size 22 F fly and even a Daddy but couldn't tempt him... Agh!
Funny old world... It's hard not too be greedy. I drove home feeling slightly disappointed.... Should have left earlier, should have caught the 'big one'.... Should have caught more.....
Home an hour now, feet up, glass of wine... And a bit of a reality check.... What a miserable git... A stunning afternoons fishing, which undoubtedly delivered the best average fish size of any session since I started fishing, some stunning fish in great condition, then an evening wandering the bank of the river in beautiful surroundings....
Definitely need to focus on the glass being half full more...
Great shout to finish work early!
