I enjoyed a pleasant day on Beat 9 of the Fox andHounds water on the Taw today. I was keen to go back after enjoying a cast there on opening day. Despite the unpleasant weekend the river didn't rise at all and looked to be fairly low. Anyway, I was eager to get going, what with Pete's assurances that the main pools did hold the odd salmon. Heavy rain gave way to cloud and finally a very pleasant day. Although I failed to connect I did encounter a salmon. While fishing through Miller pool, and standing close to the neck, a salmon of 7lb or so pushed through the shallow channel before resting for a while in the tail of Timbers and then moving on. It was just 5 feet from where I was standing mid-stream. That was the only fish that "rose". Despite a good hatch of mayfly the river was very quiet. Anyway a good day, and enjoyed my new Scott E2. Good lunch at the fox and hounds too. Some photos: 5 o'clock pool. Interesting the "Island" described on the Beat map is now a gravel beach on the left bank. Close up of 5 oclock Run between Millers and 5 oclock Looking up Timbers Millers Junction Sorry about the small photo's, the camera was set to "multi-burst" and I have spent an hour cropping the results! Thanks to Pete as ever. A crack at the sea trout next I fancy.

No worries Rob, glad you saw one but sorry you didn't connect.
Love the pic of 5 O'clock and will be taking someone down there tonight for sea trout.
Funny fish weren't rising to mays but they do suddenly switch right off of them despite the hatch carrying on.
The water between Timber and Junction has been alive with rising fish of late as has the tail of Junction. I've been away for a couple of days so will be interesting to see tonight.
Pete
