Hi all, I haven't been on here much of late as I have been in the process of selling and buying a property. Ever since my last trip to Devon at the beginning June my life seems to have revolved around viewings, mortgages and dealing with lying estate agents. Good news is I have sold and now had an offer accepted . What I find completely ridiculous is the fact that right until the point of exchanging anyone in the chain can pull out. All that money spent on surveys etc and of course the stress could be for nothing . A completely bonkers system in my opinion. Rant over I need to go fishing ....

Hi Starsky,
Many congrats and hope it all goes through smoothly.
No worries about the rant, this is what this section is for.
Am I right in thinking that estate agents are still not regulated in anyway? Do they need to take any exams etc to become an estate agent?

1. Me too! 2. Congratulations!
I've just moved into my first home (in the ownership sense) and now I have a LOT of DIY to keep me entertained.

I moved about two years ago. The immediate work programme approaches completion.
We had been in our previous house for 14years.
It was our 15th move (in 46 married years!) and still married!
When you get beyond about six, the stress seems to melt away......

This house has a lot of bodged, part done, half arsed bits stuck to it so it's taking a bit of work to undo, and then redo. I'd quite like to re-plaster with proper lime based stuff, but...

I guess it allows you to put your stamp on the place and upick all the bodged stuff.
I managed to box in some pipes despite my appalling DIY skills so now very proudly describe myself as a cabinet maker! Much cooler than fishing guide!
I have a great story to tell you and will give you a shout about it.

Thanks guys. EA's are unregulated and in my experience use that to their advantage. We have just found we that the survey on our gaff won't be until the 10th Aug, that's seven weeks since we accepted the offer !. In London there isn't enough surveyors for the current housing boom. Haven't a clue when the survey will be carried out in the property we at buying but at least the mortgage has gone through subject to the survey. Jimmy, Congrats on your first home , its a special feeling owning your first property. Our current property was our first and we have started a family here so happy memories. We have outgrown it though and desperately need to move. Paul, 15 moves in 46 years ! , I'm sorry but you need committing... I hate DIY and after attempting numerous small projects that ended up botched I now pay someone to do it properly. A little story of my DIY attempts, I spent a stressful afternoon trying to put up a curtain rail a few years back. The usual swearing and shouting ensued. Once the job was finally completed I told the other half that I was going out for a beer to celebrate my manliness. I ended up getting rat arsed and rolled in at gone 2am . I woke up in the morning and to my horror and shock my beloved curtain rail and curtains was lying on the floor in a heap with gaping holes in where the rail should be. In my hungover state I woke the other half shouting what had happened to the curtains to which she informed me that in the middle of the night I had woken up and in my drunken state had proceeded to try to find the toilet out of the bedroom window and in my confusion I had pulled the curtains and rail off the wall . She was not impressed as you can imagine .... Let that be a warning to all you DIYers , don't drink and DIY

Thanks Pete,
I'm afraid I've been ( rightly) banned from doing DIY in my house after trying to hang a door. I felt like doing the same to myself afterwards... We went to B&Q on Sunday and I made a comment about doing some DIY and the look on my missus face was of pure horror ..
I've been banned to the garden where incidentally I'm still clueless but at least it will only be plants that are at risk and not my myself and family .

Despite the fact that my Dad was great at tinkering with cars etc he seemed to be useless at DIY. I always had a sneaking suspicion that he did this deliberately.
I remember my brother and I were roped in to help construct some wardrobes that sat either side of a bed and had a further storage section that joined the two wardrobes together over the bed so you could put blankets etc in it.
We had to get it signed off by Mum but it didn't look very convincing as my bro and I were holding the middle section up so that it didn't sag or worse still fall on any poor soul who would be sleeping below it.
Left me permanently scarred when it comes to DIY!

Just thought I'd report in to Starsky our DIY expert.
I am catching up on all the jobs I wasn't able to do due to the fishing season. Currently doing some painting. As a whole it seems to be going well into day 2.
I started off with the ceiling and tried once again to try and bond with the Dulux paint pod. It didn't work. It seemed to empty paint onto the carpet rather than ceiling so I resorted to a roller. This morning on inspection I didn't miss too much and the paint has gone onto the walls, so far (on a coffee break) without incident.
Hope to get most done today as am heading to Wales to meet some friends and to do some fishing with Toby M!

If you think i am getting grumpy Pete you should see me carrying out DIY projects! There is a brilliant paint made by Dulux for painting ceilings, it goes on pink so you don't miss any area's, then within a short while turns white, magic. Cheers Richard

Hung a curtain pole back up this afternoon. Went for the the high risk, no rawl plug option and it came down pretty quickly. Managed to get an improved version that included rawl plugs but will be taking odds on it staying up over night!
