They say the only fly that catches a fish is a fly in the water.
Stayed at the Fox for two nights this week. The water on the Taw at Eggesford is low, but not as low as it can be. The leat from weir pool to bridge pool between 5 & 6 at the station is still running and that has dried up completely in the past.
I was working locally really but had two hours to spare on Tuesday and an hour on Wednesday so took a chance on spending them on the river. Tuesday I caught trout of 9" and 11" to a dry daddy on beat 6 behind the hotel. Was back at my laptop after 1hr 10mins of having put my rod up.
On the Wednesday I had an attack of "oh blow work" and blew out an appointment in Barnstaple with the view of spending rather more than the hour available looking for a day-time seatrout. As it happens it started raining after I had been on water 10 minutes and so I resigned myself to just fishing through the streamy necks and tails. Had a small peal at the head of Timber on a tiny stoat's tail double and that was that. Back at base in time to get to Barnstaple after all. (I didn't go though as the bar was too attractive!)
I guess having fished this water for 25 years I know it pretty well, but I am sure if visiting anglers were to give it a go instead of going home - or not coming down at all - they would at least feel like they have made the effort. Maybe I am wrong, but I reckon there is more chance of catching a fish in dead low water than there is on the A303! We are very lucky with the set up at the Fox and I am saddened when I hear folk say they are not going to bother fishing because of the water or, as was the case today, they go home to Kent/Surrey (!) early.
Glad we forum members keep plugging away at least..........not that we use plugs - you know what I mean.
