Mayfly Attack!
Fished below Dunscombe Bridge from 7pm til 9 last night. Lots of fly life about including a decent amount of mayfly. Rising fish in good numbers although some pools were quite quiet. Had a couple on an olive klink before switching to a Mayfly emerger. A few takes on this but the action really started when I put on a white wulff. About 8 fish came to hand in all from 3" but two to 10" and one of maybe 12". Most totally smashed the fly and the forceps were frequently needed to retrieve deep hooking. Will try to put a pic up of the biggy soon.

Thanks Mo, that is a long way.
Spent a fruitless hour on the Yeo Creedy junction last night. River was high and cool but still a foot of visibility. Had two takes in the first pool, near the reeds on a slacker section, using a white wulff. Missed both though. Saw at least one may on the water. Saw a couple of rises later on but could not find the fish again. River really coloured up as I moved up. Tried a nymph for a brief time before giving up. More rain forecast unfortunately. Might have to have a go for sea trout on the Taw if the weather keeps this up. Anyone had a go yet?

Never tried for them up there at night, had one or two in the day on dry fly. These were in July/August so may be a bit early. Always worth trying though. I've added a bit to my recent Taw post which might give you a bit of incentive.

Managed 12 bt above Salmonhutch early yesterday. Nothing larger than 9". Para Adams, white wulff and terry's terror all working reasonably well. No luck using nymphs.

Popped out to the Culm for an hour last night. Water reasonably clear but quite high wothany pools and runs not easily fishable such that I walked almost to the top before starting. Found one riser at the tail of a pool and after much rubbish casting from under a tree I rose him to a large grey wulff but missed it.
Walking back I tried a run below the weir bit before the sharp bend. Four takes in close succession but missed them all. Climbed in above the weir and fished under the bridge. Saw a huge rise about 15 yards upstream of the bridge so crabbed along the ledge under the bridge and eventually got enough line out to see if it was still there. No luck sadly. Weather looking pretty awful for a while. Hope the competitors on Dartmoor don't find it too rough!

An evening session through the golf course last night yielded 5 wee trout to various dries, best of 9". Rather quiet really. Water still quite murky but clear enough. Only a one may seen

Found one riser at the tail of a pool and after much rubbish casting from under a tree I rose him to a large grey wulff but missed it. Yes, I wandered over there last Friday afternoon to the downstream section. I needed waders just to walk through the fields as the water was ankle-deep in places. Plus the meadows were churned to a sea of mud next to the river. There don't seem to be as many places to get safely into the water as I remembered from last year. The river was fairly full and the water still coloured and there seemed to be a lot more silt about than before - I found my feet sinking quite far into the streambed in places. Like you, I walked pretty much all the way back to find something fishable. I did get in at the cattle drink just above the bridge but I couldn't wade very far up from there. The weather was warm and very humid and I didn't see a fish move all afternoon. Tried a few different dries but there was nothing doing. Vaguely depressing, really. Hope everyone else is doing better.

I seem to recall a period last season when conditions finally came good but people were struggling. Just one of those things.
Tried the creedy/Yeo junction last evening. Managed 9 which was better. Most barely 3" in size though. One of 7" helped cheer me up at the end. Grhe and wulff working ok.

Having moaned about small fish I finally found some worth writing about. Early on Sunday I went up the Taw on the upstream section. Not tons of fish rising but enough across the stretch to occupy me for nearly 3 hours. About 8 in all but including 1 of about 13", 1 of 11" and two of 10". My best Taw result so far. The bigger the fish the more gently they sipped down my para adams and only when tightening the line would you have any idea what you had on. River looks r really nice right now if you can make it.

Spent two hours til dusk last night on the Yeo Creedy junction. 16 to hand, best of 7". Four escapees, including the last fish of the evening which felt like a 10 incher at least. Bother. All on a small bwo. Lots of fly life about, river looks really good right now.

Another short evening trip to the section below Fordton bridge last night yielded 8 fish but more bigger fish. Two or three in the 10" range and one 12". All on bwo
Forgot to add that I spooked a large owl while wading up a flat stretch. It flew a few trees upstream and upon landing sent a loose branch crashing into the river Ruined the fishing for the next 30 metres!. Didn't get a good look but it was brown and quite large I would say. It sat watching me approach in that spooky way they have. It took off downstream when I got near. Also saw a kingfisher.

Don't know about the bullock on the Lower Culm but the large Devon bull is still there. Can't remember his name but I understand he likes apples!

Oh yeah, thanks.
Spent an hour on the Taw on Thursday at about 8am. Three to hand, a few more lost. Nothing bigger than 4". Met another member having an early session too. Really low water now, where did it all go?
