Hurrah, open season. Boo, I and my entire family have the cold from hell!
Unsure if I'll be out today but good luck everyone who is. Let us know how things go.

Managed to venture out mid pm. Planned on going to the Yeo around the golfcourse but the water was very turgid at Fordton bridge. Drove over to the upper Creedy which was fishable but another member was already on it. Not having time for much else I set myself up for an inevitable blank by going on the Culvery, which was actually very clear. Saw a mink at the bottom and a feral cat at the top but nothing in between.
I wondered if a tractor had crossed the Yeo at the junction with the Culvery as there were fresh tracks. Seems to have sent a large cloud downstream. The section downstream from Salmonhutch seemed clear but I gave it a miss as no doubt someone else had probably been up it already and some lady was busy chucking her dog in the river upstream of me.
I suppose it would break with tradition if I caught something on opening day!
Forgot to add, used a single beaded nymph. No risers and no fly life seen.

Visited the Taw today. Water very clear and cool. The big hole above the guage station has been totally filled in by the river so you can now wade all the way through which is good. Saw one fish under my feet but that was it. No others seen or detected. Nymphed the whole way. Even plumbed the deep pools with leaded versions. Nowt happening. Pleasant visit all the same.

spent an hour after lunch on the bottom section of the Culm today. Not much going on. Still cold and windy. Water clear but still quite high. Lots of big trees down, some of which appear to be partway chopped up. A big one on top of the weir by the road bridge. Should we tell the EA about that one?

Wouldn't bother. Don't think they'll be rushing to remove it. Few on the Yeo as well, including this one,
I can see why the bank clearing lads left it!!
In between all the obstructions, a few nice fish in very good nik for the time of year. Looking forward to seeing a bit of fly.

Finally! Visited the Taw on the way back from a dawn surf at Saunton. Fished for 1.5 hours with a heavy nymph to no avail. Saw a mink and kingfisher. Although nothing was rising thought I'd try a dry and put a small grhe on. 5minutes later I rowe a small one bit missed it. Missed another below the bridge. Saw my first rise just above the bridge and missed him when I rose him again. Found another riser someway further on after I elected to avoid fast water and try the flats. This time I finally caught and returned a 9" trout. Looked a bit lean but not as bad as last years early season fish. Called it a day after that as I was happy enough to get my first of the season.
A fir tree has fallen on the kissing gate to the lower field and it won't open. Nimble persons can climb the gate but it will need removing as it is blocking the public right of way.
Roll on summer, evening fishing not far off now.

Re the kissing gate, that's a problem for DCC not us. The chopped up trees on the Culm are down to Mr Rewe, he has lost about a dozen due to the wet and winds, planted some more to stabilise the bank in places. Had 10' BT on the Lower Culm today, lost a very large fish in an arial battle when it threw the hook, still I know where he lives, took a para emerger, Hawthorns and Grannom about, a few LDOs coming off but nothing steady.

First trip out on the Yeo today after lunch. Parked at Fordton and wtalked down to the footbridge above Dunscombe. Saw naff all until I reached the railway bridge where I was met by a steady trickle of sewage coming out of that concrete outlet below the railbridge. Rang the EA and logged it. Only just had a call from SWW to ask where it was, despite already having told the EA.
Saw a couple of rises further up but had no takes on dries or nymphs. River looks different with so much water compared to last year, all the lies I knew have moved!

Nice one, good on you for reporting it. That outfall has been reported by several members over the last few years but so far nothing has been done about it. They allege (SWW), that it only discharges at times of peak flow, but as far as I can see it is most of the time. Might take a look there tomorrow and phone myself. The amount of sewage debris hanging off the trees downstream is shocking.

Tried the top of the Creedy around midday. Found one small pocket with some rising tiddlers that I missed three times with a dry red tag. Otherwise very quiet. Lots of fry/minnows stuck in one small side stream that will probably dry out come summer. Lots of food for the kingfishers I suppose. A warm day with my increasing amounts of fly life but mostly terrestrial s as far as I could tell. No luck with nymphs today.

Having blanked on the Yeo and Taw in March, I visited the Culm last Thursday. Fished the upstream stretch (another CFFC member was downstream), starting about 11.15 am. The water was somewhat coloured but cleared during the day. Some flies about, LDO’s and a few grannom (I think) but only the odd fish rising occasionally. Had 4 fish (2 x 10, 9 and 7 inch) on dry fly (Blue quill and LDO) and lost 3 (2 of which were a very good size). Very satisfying as I got a rise from all those I could cover. After 3 pm all went quiet, but on my way back downstream I spotted the wake of a fish that I guessed was fry-feeding and tied on the nearest thing in my flybox to a fry pattern. The result is (I hope) shown below, a well conditioned (slightly plump) brownie of 14 inches.

Nice report and photo, Roy. That's a lovely fish. I know the member who was downstream and he had a good day as well, ending up with half a dozen. All on Grannom emergers, apparently.

Three hours before lunch on the upstream leg of the Taw today yielded 3 brownies, biggest about 10". All returned. All on balloon head caddis although I lost a good one on a para adams beforehand. Still lots of water. A few small feeding events today in some of the usual places. Saw a lovely bird of prey fly downstream past me through the tree tunnel. Looked like a falcon of some kind. Not the kingfisher I thought it might be from a distance.

Fished the top section of the Creedy 7-8 pm. Fresh bootprints suggested someone beat me to it. Nonetheless I managed two small trout to 6" on a grhe dry from nowhere. Not much rising, water still quite high. A few flies about. Thought VI saw a few mayflies, one ldo and some others.

Did the Culm early today. Had a nice plump 11" by just above the oxbow lake at 6.30 am on a para Adams. As ever, a good start meant the rest of the session was hard going. Only one other at 5" on a n olive nymph. Nowt rising but then I did finish by 9.45. How much further down from the oxbow is the bottom end of the beat?

The beat extends a long way further down, if you look downstream from the oxbow in the distance you can see pylons before the motorway, the beat ends at the fence line by the pylons, it's an all day job to fish it well all the way back. The fish are rising in the afternoon at the moment, had 8 fish to 18'' on Tuesday all on Mayfly and 5 to 7" all on black gnat on Friday. The nice thing for me about this section is the wildlife, so far this year i've seen fox, mink, roe deer, possible otter, snipe, sandpiper, wheatear, blackcaps, swallow, house martin, sand martin and swifts plus all the usual birds.
