I should be pleased but it makes me angry to see this person get away with such a lenient punishment. This would not have been his first or only trip. The EA are hypocrites to state the importance of the bass nursery areas when they have failed to prosecute ,as far as I know, anyone in the 18 or so years of the restrictions imposed on the Exe. Evidence is not an issue as boats can be seen from the dock side catching bass right through the "close" season. And when did IFCA come into being ? What is their brief and range of operation ? Another toothless wonder I suspect. Until we treat poachers and other miscreants the same as they do in Canada, for example, nothing will change . In fact it will only get worse if you consider the alleged antics of some of our EU friends and their catch and release policy. Rant over I'm off to the river to calm down and shoot a poacher or two. Colin.

I bumped into two poachers on a trib of the Taw last week. They were actually OK about it when I pointed out that the fishing was private and spinning was only allowed (for salmon) during March on the Taw system. I had my back up story ready just in case it got heated but they just walked off again although I have a feeling they might be back.
The funny thing was when I had finished fishing I was making my way back to my car across a field and saw a car slowly driving down the road towards where I would park for the bottom of the beat. It looked like, to me, that they were watching me head off home and started to turn the car around to go back to where I had asked them to leave.
On seeing this I did an about turn and started to walk back again towards the river. The car did another turn and parked up. I turned again as I thought I had better have a word but it turned out to be someone completely different who had parked in a random place on a very quiet road and went for a stroll or perhaps a call of nature!

Until we treat poachers and other miscreants the same as they do in Canada, for example, nothing will change . Colin. Just got off the phone after wishing my Mum, who lives in Looe a 'Happy Mother's Day' (Canada's is today)....when I thought I should see what my Devon friends are up to. While poachers here are generally fined to the full extent of the law, there's never enough CO's (Conservation Officers)to fully police the lakes and rivers, especially with government cutbacks etc. The forums I frequent often remind us of the 'hot line' phone number to use should we spot any suspicious activity, and if your lucky a CO will be dispatched immediately to investigate. This is the busy season for them, during the Steelhead runs and again in the fall for the Salmon run, as this is when your most likely to encounter unsavory angling practices. It's shame that some folks so blatantly disrespect the environment and natural resources, but as long as the rest of us are diligent in reporting them and leading by example, perhaps we can have some positive effect. On a Happier note.....spring is here .....Trout opened at the end of April and I'm off to Algonquin Park with my Son next weekend for a Canoe/portage trip into the back country for some Brook Trout fishing. The park opened late this year due to a colder then average winter and lakes up there have been covered with ice up until last week. Cheers, Ray
