Had a nice session on the Taw today, few mayfly about but they weren't really rising. Didn't matter, as an artificial drifted through likely spots usually resulted in a slashing rise. Had a few, including this one, which was dug in next to the bank in a back eddy.
Forgot to add that at the top of the beat there was a recently dead large Springer in the shallows,, at least 12lb, which had a lot of fungus on it. Hopefully some clean fish have made it up there as well. Must remember a spool of 15lb !

Nice fish. Wondered about the Taw today but opted for the Duchy instead. Hoping a drier week means I can get out around Crediton in the evening s

I had a tough couple of hours on the Taw on Tuesday, mid morning. River was gin clear with lots of hatching fly life, but no fish rising anywhere. I blanked, despite trying numerous nymphs at varying depths; I didn't fish too far in the 2 hours, from the bottom of the beat to about 100yds past the bridge. It was tough going and disappointing to blank, but the weather was lovely and I shared the river with a kingfisher or 2 so not all bad

Better luck next time pusser, I had three trips on the Okement last year when you would have sworn there where no fish in the place! Low and clear is never easy, I hate to say it so early but we could do with some rain. Did I really just type that!

Had a few soggy but enjoyable hours on the Taw this morning , accompanied by Halfstoned. River looked about a foot lower than normal levels, so this meant more ground needed to be covered to find likely spots. Heavy rain knocked any chance of catching on dries, so it was back to the Duo. Though it was hard to keep the klink afloat or in fact see it! I had four takes, two wbt. Halfstoned had four takes, four wbt including a cracking 14-15 inch fish. Photos taken but can't seem to upload to Photobucket at the moment , so these will follow.

A big thank you to Hardytim and Pusser for sorting out today. I would state up front that had I been fishing on my own I don't think I would have even put my waders on given the low water, wind and torrential rain. Just goes to show that you never know in this game, a day that I would have written off provided me with one of my biggest wbt ever( I doubt the little headwater's I fish hold fish of that size) and a chance to fish a totally different style of river( its sort of mix between the Teign and a meadow stream). The first run of that fish will live long in the memory and for once the big one didn't get away, the hook fell out in the net so it was obviously my day!

Well done, a 14-15" wbt on the Taw is a real achievement and will probably remain a personal best for I long time I would imagine. Were you fishing the Crediton Fly Fishing Club stretch?
Congratulations,
Paul.

Thanks devondabbler it really went like a train and I thought it was a sea trout to start with. I'm glad Tim was there to get a picture and confirm that I wasn't seeing things. It was on the CFFC water at Taw bridge, in fact it came from the first pool above the bridge. The rain was soon forgotten when that fish finally succumbed ( after one scary moment when I tried to net it too soon), might take a while to dry my kit out but it was more than worth it. My one regret is that I didn't get a more accurate measure on it, my rod has marks on it up to 12" ( don't often need any more) so I had to make a sort of egg gestimate at the length , maybe I can measure it in relation to the net when Tim gets the picture up, not all that important I know but it would have been nice to say it was exactly so and so inches as I probably won't see the likes of him/her again.

Beautiful fish, many congrats.
From what I have seen so far this year the Taw has fished really, really well. The other thing I've noticed is that the average size of fish has been good too. Not sure if it is a mild winter thing or not but we have had some nice fish since the off and all have been in good shape since the first day of the season.

Managed to get Tim's picture to load but having seen the monster from the Dart it looks like my fish would have been a tasty snack for that fish. I have often read about Mike Weavers 20" fish from the West Dart above Hexworthy but thought they were a thing of the past, a very well done to all concerned, truly the fish of a life time. Hopefully my bait fish is pictured below.

If it's over 12 inches it's a great fish from the Taw, or any of the club's water for that matter.Nicely done.

Thanks Yeoman, I think I should have taken a picture against the rod to give some perspective, looks smaller lying in the bottom of the net!

I had 5 hours on the Taw this afternoon, and it was fantastic!
I decided to fish only with a dry (the Mega May strikes again). The afternoon started slowly but after about midway through it picked up quite nicely. I had 6 to the net and lost a couple (a couple of the larger ones in the pics below, although the largest, at about 12" slipped out of the net before I could get a photo).
The weather was kind and there were masses of midges on the river, I did see a few danica hatching a bt later on along with some grannom.
I had a thoroughly enjoyable time and, the best part, I learnt loads; casting, presentation etc I concentrated on and really feel that i've made improvement today. The very best thing I learnt today though, there is nothing better than casting to, and catching, a rising fish! Wow, what a feeling!!

Great stuff Pusser... casting a dry to rising fish is the heart and soul of fly fishing for me... I'd rather spend a 'tough day' finding 4 rising fish and hardly making any casts than catching far more working up the river nymphing... it really helps that there's been so little rain, even on Devons rain fed normally silty rivers you can spot fish at the moment
