Had a day over on the river piddle yesterday, stunning little river. As luck would have it (agh!) there wasn't a cloud in the sky all afternoon so it was tough going... Well I actually just read a book and made up some leaders during the afternoon.
Didn't catch any thing of any size, but had about 10 wbt on a sedge all casts to rising fish in the evening. But, boy, are their some big fish in the river, a couple were undoubtedly stockies (not sure if stocked there or from down/upstream), but there were a few real nice wild fish as well.... They just refused to feed all day.
The largest was well over 3 lb (I'd guess about 4, as it was bigger than anything I'd seen before by a long way), obviously hiding out in an area I hadn't a clue how to get to him.... I'd have struggled with a hand grenade.
Another fish of about 2lb was very frustrating- sat on the inside of a bend opposite a nice willow for his retreat to cover. I couldn't wade out to the left bank and cast up to him because of the willow and he had eyes in the back of his head- the first two times I spooked him from 20 ft, so onto the hands and knees - the moment the rod started to rise off he went again. Because of the bend and bank vegetation there were two choices, cast from 15 ft, but he was far to spooky at that distance or cast from 20 ft plus and put a serious reach to the true left bank to avoid the bank side vegetation. Unfortunately my little 8 footer couldn't reach far enough... Bugger.
So two things learnt...
1. I need to go back to the piddle, feels like unfinished business, tricky buggers
2. I need to treat myself to a nice 9 or 9' 6 '' rod
A great day though, they'd be no point to it all if it was easy..
