Whenever things start going pear shaped and I get frustrated I always recall a quote from A Passion for Angling "I'll be really glad when I've had enough of this" not sure who said it but it's true that however crap the fishing is I'd still rather have a bad days fishing than a good days shopping!! The best thing about this lark is you never stop learning.

I have found that a quiet sit down on the bank for 10 minutes or so works wonders when I get frustrated with myself (also gives the swim a rest as well). There is enough to look at and listen to to calm your mood and set you ready to try again

Depends for me on whether I'm smoking... Swear loudly and then have a cigarette seems to work best If I'm not smoking... I just swear longer... this is less effective

Spent a peaceful few hours on the Exe on the DAA Hollam beat this afternoon. The water was low (as with everywhere else) and gin clear. It's the first time I've been on this beat and it was great. Plenty of pocket water and some nice pools. It's made a bit tricky by overhanging trees but a lovely stretch. I decided to just take my nymph rod and it was great fun. The fish are very spooky and very wily but i managed 6 to the net, the largest being about 9" and the rest about 6".

Looks like some nice wild water,is a DAA ticket really just £35 for a season? Shame its so far to drive from Yeoford, might be worth it though for the price of three day tickets!

Yup, £35 is an absolute bargain as there is some very nice water available (I drive it from Budleigh Salterton!)
