Having gone out with Mike W on Wednesday night for Sea Trout on the Lower Teign waters, blank for me, small BT for Mike. I fancied a change, so a trip to the Exe estuary on Saturday was planned. I arrived soon after low water and the area was swarming with mullet, quick chat with the bait fishermen confirmed that there was a lot about, they were frustrated as they had left the bread at home. Over a four hour period I managed to hook 4 mullet and bring to hand 2, it was the big ones that got away as usual, 18" & 16", the first mullet I have caught on fly. I shall return as soon as the tides are right again, even though I spent a good hour cleaning my waders, boots etc., the jacket had to go through the washing machine, having fallen over in shin deep estuary mud, I can still smell it!

Mojo, congratulations, that sounds like fun. I often see lots of mullet on the Dart estuary when looking for bass and have tried small nymphs but never managed to attract their interest. What flies did you use and was it a dead drift or retrieving ?

In the Fly Fishing and Fly Tying magazine there have been several articles by Colin McLeod on mullet and he gets success on size 12 double red beaded diawl bachs and flexi shrimps (brown elastic effectively). He uses Kamasan B120 hooks when tying them up. Slow retrieve. He also uses droppers

Hi Guys, New to this but enjoying comments. I suggest that you want to try fly fishing for mullet over the top of the spring tides when the maggots are getting washed out of the weed banks, the action can be awesome at times.

And a small (smaller than the maggots you buy for coarse fishing - think anorexic pinkie sized) white "killer bug" type fly on a B175 will do sterling work in just the situation described above
