Sorry it seems ithe link is a subscription link, I am at work which has a subscription but here's the gist.
Network Rail has announced its desire to remove three weirs from a river in Exeter.
The rail infrastructure operator said it wanted Pynes, Exwick and Cowley weirs removed from the River Exe to tackle flooding of the Cowley and Stafford bridges.
Flooding of the bridges over the past two years has caused delays and cancellations of trains on The Great Western Main Line.
Network Rail carried out an in-depth environmental study of the area and its flood risk. It said removing the weirs would provide the highest return on investment.
The river would be returned to its natural state, meaning the water level would fall by up to 1m under the bridges in question.
Network Rail commercial scheme sponsor Joanna Grew said: “Over the years, flooding at these two bridges has caused huge disruption on the Great Western Main Line, severely inconveniencing passengers and harming the region’s economy.
“We are now working with the council and other stakeholders to gather their views on our proposal and will keep the local community updated on our progress.”
