Popped up to the Yarty (trib of the Axe) for a couple of hours this afternoon. I hadn't had a single fish in 2 hrs, just about to pack in when the line checked when nymphing through a pool, lifted into it expecting a 8-10" wbt and all heel broke loose, a fat sea trout leapt about a foot clear of the water.... After a bit of a tussle I'd caught my first ever sea trout.. 21"...very chuffed.. And very frustrated that I didn't bother taking my camera out with me.....

Well done on your first sea trout. The Axe and the Yarty produce very good sea trout fishing,in my opinion better than the brown trout . Over the years there have been many in double figures with a 16lb fished out of the upper reaches some years ago. My best is 9lb but I have lost much bigger ones. A deaf bloke I used to meet regularly on the Abbey Gate water caught some big ones including a10.5 lb fish. It is a mistake to wait for the traditional warm balmy evenings of June onwards. There is almost always a run of early bigger fish. Get out now and watch the fish moving through the pools on dimpsy dark. Tight lines, Colin.

Cheers Colin, I didn't buy a full game licence this year as I thought I'd concentrate on wbt, but I think next season I'll have to spend a bit of time trying some sea trout late eve fishing....
