Nice little session on an elk hair emerger without going more than a couple of hundred yards from the front door. Strong upstream wind ,a tint to the water and plenty of trees, plus the odd bridge made for a real mix of conditions. Landed 10 brownies up to 10" and pricked/lost another half dozen. I see our little river had a mention in one of the "mags" . A nice article but not totally accurate . Most of the local "boys" who use cheese are well in to their forties, most without licences .

Hey billyfish... Funny it's probably my closest river and I've never made it down, although I have a friend who fly fishes the very bottom stretch quite regularly. What mag was the article in?

Yes Pete, always brings back memories for me as my dad taught me to fly fish in the same pools and runs over 55 years ago . I broke my old glass rod severel times but became competent enough to go and fish the "big" river Otter. For their size they really go . When the river was coloured we would go down and fish for eels . My dad knew a cockney ,retired to the area, that would buy as many as we could catch. Boisker, the article was in Fly Fishing and Fly tying.

Lovely story billyfish, were the trout caught on the dumpling and constable?

Long time ago Pete, can't really remember. It would have been a fly that would have been a "reject" or possibly one of my first efforts. The Dumpling is a great fly for when the river is fining down after being coloured. Went to the Otter last night and had 10 in fairly quick time . All on a small hares ear emerger. No smolts though. I think and hope that they went out on the last rise combined with the spring tides. With luck they have changed places with some fresh sea trout. Might have a go tonight. Colin

Good luck with the sea trout, how have you found that hatches over there this season? I only ask as I have seen some really great hatches of olives last week or so and dry fly fishing has been excellent.

It's only been in the last couple of weeks that we have had any significant fly hatches. Since then they have been getting better and better despite the cool evenings. Didn't make the river tonight . I was delayed down on one of my local beaches. Good little session using peeler crab . Missed a bass first cast and then caught 1 lsd and three smoothounds up to about 7lb and lost a couple more. Those "hounds" really go on light gear. Colin.

Same over here, in fact probably only a week or so but the hatches have been heavier than I can recall over the last few years. A good sign I hope.
