So I've just picked up a Shakespeare Oracle Switch (11' #8/9) and reel, as a gift for a friend who I'm taking grilse chasing as a thank you for a favour, which came with a John Norris Atlantic shooting head... Schoolboy error - no running line sorted as yet. Have braided backing at a pinch, but probably not ideal is it? Any preferences / suggestions / advice very gratefully received indeed!!! Many thanks, KevZim

Hi Kev, I prefer the Rio Connect Core Shooting line for all of my heads be they Scandi, Skagit AFS or whatever. It is easy to manage and to fish with but isn't cheap but it is good. I had a look at the Norris site and it looks like they do some running line for a tenner.

Thanks Pete. Was concerned the Norris one might not be up to it, it's always interesting to hear what others use. Back in the day I made heads with Norris or mill end #12 lines and used a dt3/4 floater as running line. Just can't really get on with mono / amnesia etc as running line. Fine for casting, but an utter sod should you catch a fish! Where do you get the Rio? GAC? Cheers, Kev

I get mine from Fly Fishing Tackle in Crediton Kev and like you say a cheaper alternative may cause you problems with line management etc especially if you are playing a big one. No experience of the JN running lines but I bought some of their trout lines to put on the hotel rods a few years ago and they were OK for the job.

I use Airflo Ridge running line on my Rio SSVT and Airflo Rage lines that I throw on my two switch rods (a Beulah 11'6" and the Shakespeare 11'). It is quite stiff and a little thicker than some. Thin is great if you want to throw a lump of line for miles but is a devil to manage and the slightly thicker types that create a little more friction seem to aid control of the cast and presentation and are better to manage in the hand. That's my opinion anyway. The Shakey 11' Switch is a great rod at any price but brilliant for £70. I have confined my 11'6" rod to the reserve pile as it is heavier and more like a small spey rod. I have the 7/8 by the way.

Seem to have lost the lengthy reply I typed when I finally got home from work last night... yes, we had a day at Endsleigh. The running line was great, though water levels were low so the head slapped about too much and swithched to a tapered line.
Same as everywhere in the west - not enough water. We both had salmon jump on pools we were fishing during the day, a large (easily double figures) springer that was coloured in my case. Sadly saw three dead salmon (all fresh and silver) between us (though one may have been seen by us both to be honest due to flow) - in any case - abrasions infected with heavy fungal growth, and sadly a dead grayling of decent size (30cm+) also fungus infected. It felt wrong fishing for stressed / sick fish, so after a lunch break I fished a #3 for trout and grayling, and picked up my best tamar Grayling to date - 35cm. Other rods weren't as excited as I was about it when I mentioned it, hey ho. The fishery itself was cracking. Maybe a little too well kept on some stretches for me, but it 's an expensive syndicate and access needs to be available for elderly rods I'm sure. I'll revisit it annually I reckon. For the rest of this season will concentrate on association water upstream... please bring some rain!!! Preferably in a fortnights' time when I have some leave booked to focus on grilse and peal. Talking of peal managed to drop THREE (heinous operator error to do it three times) on Endsleigh. How's your season going then? Determined to bust my Salmon duck this year. Weekends, two weeks in august, first week of October... rain (and conveniently timed) would help.

I had a day on beat 5 at Endsleigh last moth. It is a lovely place to be. Glad you are putting in the hours - only wish I had some hours to put in.
