Just returned from the Lochy. Hard work all week but I managed to catch 5 including this 22 pounder on the last afternoon. Despite the water being very low I fished a 2.5" brass Francis tube on a fast sinking leader and concentrated on the deep holding pots. I also used a switch rod with a bomber and did get a salmon to have a look. Colin.

Hi Colin,
Fantastic fish many congrats!
Really interesting to hear about the bomber too. I have fished them a little, more on the Taw than anywhere else but without any success. It must have been thrilling to see a fish respond to it.
Do you riffle hitch much?

Hi Pete, On our recent trip to Norway I caught three salmon on the bomber , one on the deep down Francis and one on the riffle hitch. The fish ranged in size from 5.5 to 10 kilo. I seem to have a real problem catching salmon in the more conventional fashion. My mate fishes a Francis tube ,no bigger than 12 mm, and has plenty of action. When I fish in the same way nothing happens. To be honest I don't worry too much as I enjoy tinkering with other methods. To see a 7.5 kilo fish come up and take a dry fly is just magic. Colin. Don't forget our "meet" sometime. I'm not so busy now so anytime you can manage it.

Hi Colin,
Huge kudos for fishing the out side of the box patterns and better still making them work so well. I have had fish come for the riffle hitch but never hooked up.
It does often make me wonder about our "mind set" when we are fishing. It can be a a rod, line or often, a fly choice that can mean we don't fish as well as when we put the familiar combination back on. I know when I tie on a hares ear I am thinking the whole time I won't catch a fish, change it and feel and fish a whole lot better!
I hadn't forgotten about meeting up, I still have issues with fatigue at the moment and can't get out for long but hope this will get better and I can pop over perhaps in Nov/Dec?
Pete

As soon as you feel up to it come over and I will endeavour to bore you to death for an hour or two. As soon as you have a good experience with a fly or method you have the confidence to try it again. I have confidence in the bomber because I caught on it the first time I used it . My mate is on the Lochy this week and caught a good sea trout on the bomber yesterday. The first time I used the riffle was on the Findhorn a few years ago. I didn't catch during a really difficult week but I had enough looks and follows to keep trying. Interestingly I have had a couple of salmon at night fishing for sea trout with a surface lure. One thing for sure confidence or "that feeling" is a major factor in a successful trip, but then again it's not all about catching. Colin.

Will do Colin, I'll let you know.
I think you are right about when something works straight off you'll be more inclined to try it again.
When it comes to the Bomber it is an "out there" technique for the UK that I'd be more likely to try for a bit but go back to something else relatively quickly. It is never really going to work on that basis so I need to try it more and will. Thanks for the inspiration!
Interesting what you say about "that feeling" as I often wonder if that is the positive vibe thing?
