How cold is it right now?! I walked the dog along a stretch of the Taw this morning and large parts of slower moving sections were frozen. I'm supposed to be grayling fishing tomorrow, should be interesting...

Hi Pete
Just got back from some casting practice and its going to take an hour to thaw out!! I hope to give Bake Lake a quick visit tomorrow unless its frozen over just to get the rod moving again.Roll on spring and the first hatches on the moors. Yes my new year resolution is to leave the salt and get back to the moorland streams. cant wait ...... Let us know how the Grayling trip went. I dont envy the wading although the water may be warmer than the air !!

Well done that brave man. Facing the cold on the look out for fish. No grayling caught on my bit of the Exe so far this cold spell. Guess as the weather has been dry and the river dropping so they are all holed up in the deeper holes. Like troutbum - looking forward to the spring and slightly warmer weather. Still have some bank work to do which will serve as an excuse as I want to get in done before the season starts.

Wasn't as cold as I had feared and had a few fish. Even had a small hatch of LDO's that got a few grayling looking up and caught them off the top too. Mark had a really nice grayling of around 2lb. We were fishing on the chalk so a few more fish about. Think you are right about the deep holes down here though FBF, I went to bankclearing last Sunday and think I am still recovering!!
Hi TroutBum, hope I see you on the Moors this year! I'm reading the new Gierach at the mo...have you got it?

V jealous about fish taking off the top in January Pete. No not got the new Gierach yet - what is the title? However Santa did leave a limited edition copy of Standing In A River Waving A Stick in my stocking. Its signed by the great man himself, boxed and on very posh paper. By the way Bake Lake was frozen solid - about 3 inches thick !! Went casting again instead. Mark

Hi Mark,
yes, its Fools Paradise...I still really love his books but feels like the last 2 or 3 of them that the edge has come off a bit. It might be my high expectations but they just don't quite feel the same.
I'm half way through and am saving the other 1/2 as I have a long flight coming up but there hasn't been a mention of AK yet.
Are you playing with distance casting?, this cold thin air should add a few feet!

Yes its mostly distance practice but also I like looking around the field for targets to hit. A diiferent colour patch of grass or a feather or a piece of paper. It really helps technique as it stops you thinking to much about the mechanics. Still get strange looks from the dog walkers though !!

Really enjoying it. I`m starting with the 7 then going onto the 5. It seems to make for smotther casting to go down a couple of weights.
Not up against the tape but that is next !!
