I managed to get out a couple of times in the last week or so with the nice weather we had and for a total of 5 hours spent fishing over 3 different days landed 26 Grayling and 3 Trout.
Biggest Grayling came to a dry as well which is always nice.
2 more weeks before i stop fishing for the brownies and get the nymphs out for the Grayling proper.

Well its was the last day fishing for Brown trout today on the Tone until next year so i decided to get out for a couple of hours even if i am suffering from Man flu.
Things looked promising with the river looking in great shape and not to many leaves coming down.
As i crept in to position to flick my set out of a small weighted nymph on the point and a spider on the dropper a fish rose so i was looking forward to starting.
Second cast the line stopped and a nice 10" wild brownie came to hand.
This was followed very quickly by 2 others one small and one around 12" all of which were in superb condition with lovely white tips to there fins.
As i worked up the pool i hooked and lost a couple more fish one which was a brown the other a grayling.
I reached the top of the pool to where a small mill stream joins the main river and put on a heavier Nymph on the point as the water was deeper as you need to get down to the fish.
I landed 5 grayling from the pool with 2 of the fish over 3/4lb.
The river shallows up and there was a fish rising around 15 yards upstream so back on with the lighter nymph and away i went again to cover the fish.
No joy but less then 5 yards in front of me tight in front of a stick a grayling of around 1/2ld was taking nymphs in the current.
Its quite rare to be able to sight fish for them so i covered the fish expecting it to dart off but no it looked at the nymph and ignored it. This happened around 7-8 times but the fish was still feeding confidently so a fly change was in order.
I put on a tiny size 18 nymph weighted with a 1.5mm tungsten bead with Pete T's words of wisdom ringing in my ear(I was chatting to Pete yesterday when he was on his way home from fishing the wylye and he said that the smaller the fly he fished the more confidant the rises were).
First cast covering the fish it looked and ignored. Second cast bang fish on.
Now in my mind there is nothing quite like catching a fish that you have sight cast to and deceived in to taking your fly.
I was over the moon.
As i fished up the beat i managed to get my fly stuck in a branch over head so went to sort it out.
In front of me was a huge grayling of well over 1 1/2lb possibly knocking on for 2lb which is a great fish by any rivers standard.
Anyway i managed to mess things up and with a flick of its tail it moved off upstream.
I hooked a couple more smaller fish before calling it a day after around two hours fishing.
Total for the day 4 Browns to hand and 7 Grayling.
Lets hope we have a couple of frosts soon to get the Grayling looking for deeper water.

I managed to get out for an hour after a fish or two and remembered to take the camera with me. Had a few nice fish and took a couple of pictures. I love this time of year. The river was in superb condition. WCB

How's the Grayling season going so far on the Tone - did anyone get some fishing in on the Dry cold spell a few weeks back.
Nice to see Toby catching well in October, will have to try and get on some local water and have a go.
One of the lads I was talking to said there were Grayling in the Lyner - must make a mental note to quiz him more on this.
At least it's not long before the Season starts and Brownies are fair game again.
Sandy.

I have not wet i line on the Tone for ages now.
When the river has looked good i have been busy working and when i have been free its been up and coloured.
I was out bank clearing today on one of my favourite beats of the Tone and the river looks like it is just starting to become fishable.
Roll on Friday when i plan to have a crack at the river again with a good friend.

Well i managed to get on the river yesterday with Pete who had not fished the river before and we had a great time.
Pete's "sh*thammer" fly even managed to get a few fish looking up and we had a few on it with one nice Brownie slamming it hard.
Not sure how many we caught but mid teens sounds about right.
It was just nice to be out on the river again in great company.
Roll on the warmer days when all you will need to fish is a dry.

Following on from Toby I thought I'd like to say what a great day I had. It was a real pleasure to fish the Tone for the first time and as Toby says we managed a few. This was despite the fact that I didn't really fish very well I think due to the fact that I should have been tucked up in bed with the lurgy that I can't seem to shake since coming back from NZ. But what are you supposed to do when a mate asks you to go fishing?! We decided to just share a rod and fish together and chew the fat. My first Tone grayling Toby brings one in After lunch Toby spotted a lone rise from one of his favourite spots. We had planed to walk further down stream and work our way back but it is hard to leave a rising fish especially when hatches at this time of the year don't last long. We got in just down stream and I managed a grayling from where we got in and so it was Tobys go at the riser. He covers it... and first cast the fish hits the dry... Another grayling for Toby... The Tone is a great little river and is challenging and really interesting to fish. It was a real pleasure to have my own personal guide for the day who clearly loves the Tone...thanks very much fella!

I'm going mad We are having some great weather at the moment but the Tone is still high and coloured. I am gagging to get out there and have a few off the top. The Tone is regulated alot from Clatworthy ressie which must still be full up as there is still plenty of water pushing through. I hope by the middle/end of next week the river will be in fine condition for me to fish for the first time this season. T

Just snuck out for a couple of hours today to get in practise for the hopefully fast rising fish on the Culm tomorrow. I had to go practise as i am under pressure to perform with lots of ribbing from Pete as i tend to miss most that hit my dry. Anyway i was glad i did as i had a great couple of hours. I only fished a length of river maybe 250 yards long but managed to land a couple of Chub a couple of Grayling and over 10 Brownies. I even had a few rising to my cdc and elk Lets hope this warmer weather will turn the Culm fish on

Just below TFFC waters on a free strech. I fished yesterday from 1pm on a new bit of the Tone i have never fished before but i did some bank clearing over the winter and thought it might be nice to try and boy was it I have never had so many fish out in such a short bit of river. Fishing the duo with a copper head haresear over the afternoon i hit it just right and caught Brownies and Grayling with nothing under 8-9" which is very rare on the Tone. Best Brown was a fish of around 14-15" with grayling over 1 1/2lb coming to the net. Most cam to the nymph with only 3-4 coming to the dry but i did miss a few . The wind got up and the clouds thickened at around 5pm so the fishing slowed and i dropped downstream to the lower part of the beat where Pete and myself fished a few weeks ago. There was a nasty downstream wind that made life very hard but i picked up a couple while waiting for a friend to turn up to have a fish. One the way out he was witness to a car prang so did not get out until 6.30 by which time it was cold as well as windy but we managed to fish on sharing a rod and he landed his first brown and grayling of the season. Looking forward to getting out again soon.

Its only the 6th Chub i have caught that high up on the Tone. There is free fishing in Taunton Town Centre and i have had Chub to well over 5lb on the fly there with a friend having one over 6lb. You will have to wait until June 16th to fish for them again

Popped out for a 1 1/2 hr this morning as the weather was so good and ihad not been able to get out so far this Easter weekend. There was plenty of hatch coming off with a sprinkling of Grannom and the river looks superb. I set up with a klink and dink and had a nice brownie and a few grayling out of the first pool i fished. Moving up the river i saw a nice rise from clearly a better fish so snipped of the nymph and covered the fish a few times with no joy. As i moved up the river the fish that had risen shot past me and was a big fish for the Tone and looked nearly 2lb. I had a few more fish mostly on the nymph and on the last cast took a brownie on the dry which was cool. I had caught a fair few fish with these two the biggest today. A plump Brownie compared to the first one i took a photo of and the first time i have managed to hook a fish from a run that i always fish. A hog of a Grayling and the biggest i have had for a while from the Tone The Grayling don't seem to of started spawning yet on the Tone.

I have fished a few times this season on the Tone and its tribs.
The fishing has been for the most part quite tough which i think is the same for most of the other rivers in the Southwest.
I did however have a great day a few weeks ago with a friend and we had well over 15 fish between us.
I have mainly been fishing a klink and dink this season with 95% of the fish falling to the nymph but today was different with the fish looking up and it was great to just fish dries.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.
