Spent a day on the Dorset chalk streams, casting a giant mayfly pattern around. Not a great hatch but had a fair few fish. It was really great to have the fish nailing a fly with such enthusiasm and to be able to watch them follow the fly downstream. Great day.

In my enthusiasm,I caught the tip of my rod on the bank while casting into a tricky spot and snapped the top clean off. Gutted. Still a good day tho.

Oh mate... painful... Looks a lovely stretch, the Frome has definitely reached the tricky stage with weed, I lost a real nice fish last time out which buried itself under and into a huge block of weed. I had to get my hands in, felt him briefly then he slipped the hook... it then took about 10 mins to extract my leader and hook!

One stretch is so overgrown with weed, some parts are really tough to fish. The other stretch,a faster bit of water, seems to have barely any.
I have also seen a grayling so big my heart nearly stopped.Bring on June 16th.
We will have to get out once they cut the weed in a few weeks.

Nice, seems like the chalk streams have had a really great mayfly season. Not sure what everyone else thinks but as far as Devon goes it was one of the best but of course there were still some nice highlights.

Yeah, we'll have to get a day booked at some point Jezney... Pete... The hatch on the Hillfarrance was ok and wasn't bad on parts of the Axe.... But first time I've seen the hatch on those rivers so not sure how representative they were, certainly the fish were switched into mayfly patterns... I've used MegaMay, extended bodies and a CDC may loads the last couple of weeks. Neither the Axe or the Hillfarrance had the number of flies that I encountered last time out on the Frome, but not sure if they ever do.....
