At the end of last year I made a promise to myself that I would try and do all of the things I'd planned to do but never got round to them.
Top of the list was to start playing keyboards again. I used to play in a band in the 90's and loved it but when we broke up the band I sort of gave them up.
That changed at the start of the year and I have really enjoyed myself and even after a long day on the river I treat myself to a quick play, I guess I have become a keyboard warrior of another kind!
Anyone else have things they want or hope to do that is away from the river?

Pete it's great that you are playing again, it's difficult to get motivated without a band around you. I played bass and then lead guitar in a band years ago and still have a Fender Stratocaster gathering dust in my dining room. I do try to remember how to "strum" once a year maybe. My wife try's to get me to play more but I can't be arsed. She has bought a Yamaha key board in an attempt for us to play together but so far we haven't got very far. Perhaps we could form a band, need a name though, what about Pete T and the double haulers.

It has been a bit of an obsession and I have been known to play in favour of going fishing. This year I have managed a better balance!

Regrets?

I used to play drums in a couple of bands and loved making music on my computer with a small collection of synths. My dad was a drummer too so I guess it was inevitable. He was alot better than me obviously. I still have his drum kit.
If anything,I would love to get back into being a dj in the nightclubs. I worked in a few in Torquay and Exeter back when I was 18.
Not sure I could handle being up until 6am any more tho.
Music has always been a huge part of my life.

Hi Terry,
That is a great name or perhaps the Tailing Loopers?
The keyboard I am playing again is a Fender too, made by the same company as your guitar. It's a 1972 Fender Rhodes electric piano, I love the sound and action. It was a birthday present from my wife and it turned out the guy I bought it from was someone I used to buy keyboards from many years ago. Music, like fishing seems a small world too.
Rob, I know what you mean, I have to try and play at least once a day and sometimes it might only be for only 10 mins but that can be a enough.
Jezney, tempted by the drums again? I bet the kids would love it! I've done some DJing too and really enjoyed it.

So we have keyboards, brass section, percussion, bass guitar or crap lead guitar. All we need now is a vocalist and some backing singers and we are rocking.

I reckon we have the makings of a Commitments R & B style band with a horn section!

I'm sure you can have some practice sessions at the golf range . If you want you could also play a gig there. For Sidmouth folk festival there are four nights during the course of the week where there is live music at this venue. It's really good and worth a visit. Admission is free and there is a good bar run by nice looking girls. This is not a "Micky Mouse" operation. You can see some of last years acts if you look for Sidmouth Fringe Festival on the web. Reading this makes me want to blow the dust off my acoustic guitar and start annoying the wife and kids again. Motivation seems to come and go as far as playing goes , not a problem I've ever had where fishing is concerned.

I can play passable rhythm guitar and just about hold my own on vocals. Had loads of fun playing in a soul band around Bristol venues in the late '80's. We were pretty crap but loved it. My son Jack is taking it all a bit more seriously: soundcloud.com/theruins99/speak

I am just down from having a quick 10 mins on my Rhodes and was playing some Rufus and Chaka Khan so your post got me wondering!

Mostly stuff we wrote ourselves, but we covered Cutis Mayfield's 'Move on Up' and King Curtis' 'Memphis Soul Stew'. Fortunately, to the best of my knowledge all recordings have been destroyed.
THE defining Rhodes scene stealer:
Love Rufus and Chaka Khan.
How about you Pete, What songs did you play?

Yes Pete, started again , need some new strings but my 10 year old has now decided that she would like me to teach her guitar, so sounds like the perfect excuse to make as much noise as I like! Rather rusty at the moment ( me not the strings) and fingers hurting as I've lost the calluses on my finger tips, forgotten how much I enjoyed it though.

Great to hear halfstoned, I am sure you'll be groovin in no time!
JJO, love it and love the film too. That is pretty much what I have. It's called the suitcase as the it sits on an amp although mine is a slightly earlier model.
When it comes to music, when we played in the band it was original stuff that was a mix between the Doors and the Specials with a bit of Inspiral Carpets too.
Nowadays though it's pretty eclectic and can be anything from REM to Madness via Chic and Jamaraqui Mentioning Chic I watched something on Nile Rodgers and love his use of 9th and 11ths which I've tried to play with a bit more.

It is almost as old as me! The sound though is so warm compared to something you get on a synth etc and the keyboard allows you play in a variety of expressive ways. I find myself looking at ebay and the vintage stuff that comes up and shudder at what they are now worth. Think it must be similar with guitars.
