I had 4 hours on the Lyd at Sydenham (Westcountry Angling Passport Beat 26) this afternoon and I have to say it was absolutely wonderful.
The river was gin clear and running to a not too bad level. The beat is fairly long but the access to it is easy for most of the way along it.
I headed off downstream (on the advice of a gamekeeper at Sydenham) to fish back up to where I had parked. The afternoon was very pleasant in the late autumn sunshine and there was a bit of a breeze blowing, which didn't really affect me at river level.
the beat has 4 or 5 deep pools and a couple of shallower pools. I started to see some action within 1/2 hour of getting in the water, in a long but shallow pool. The water surface was like a sheet of glass and I could see fish holding in the current all around my feet. It was absolutely magical to see trout taking my nymph a few feet in front of me!
In the first hour and a half i'd caught 7 fish, of varying sizes with the largest being about 7 or 8 inches, and I even caught a Grayling (or at least i'm pretty sure it was, someone can confirm), who was obviously VERY hungry as the nymph was almost as big as the fish.
I think this has to have been my best session of fishing so far, absolutely wonderful stuff. I caught 7 in the end but lost around 4 or 5 more and had plenty more bites, all on the nymph bar 2 bites to a dry in a deep pool.
As I walked downstream to start fishing there were plenty of daddies flying around but I didn't see any actually down at river level, and there were very few rising fish.
I can highly recommend thi beat, it is absolutely stunning (cost is 5 passport tokens).
Here are a few pics of the beat, one of the Trout and, what I think is, the Grayling ....
