I hope you were out on the Taw today Pete, it was looking stunning... I've had a busy few weeks, both at work and weekends, so little ops for fishing. I was at work heading between reserves and crossed the Taw on the Chulmleigh-Ashreigny Road, so pulled over and had 10 mins and a coffee looking at the river from the bridge... I couldn't decide whether it made me depressed as I couldn't fish or cheered my up having a break Clear water, a,hatch of something smallish (I couldn't make them out from the bridge) but olive sized... And more importantly lovelly Browns feeding across the pool, I must have seen about 10 different fish rising, you could see them perfectly, plus a few more nymphing... The biggest looked about 16" with a few in the 12" range. Without a doubt the most productive feeding pool since earlier in the season I've seen. I toyed with going asking the house if I could fish as the balsam looked like no one did from that side, but alas my gear was all at home. Still, an enjoyable 10 mins watching from above and pondering what order I'd try and pick them off given the chance... I'm gonna see if I can get away early and finish at lunch tomorrow... East/West Dart, Axe, Tone or Frome.... Decisions, decisions

One of my favourite places in the world Boisker. I know where you saw the fish rising too.
I've been away for a week chasing salmon in Scotland but am back now for the last week of the season.
It looks like there has been more rain here than where I was!

Where were you and how did you get on ? Detail please. Week today we will be up on the banks of the Lochy. Chasing residents probably but who knows. Colin.

On the Wrack Colin. Water was really low and we didn't really see any signs of runners but I managed a fish from Wrack Pool that had been in a week or so.
I think only 3 fish were caught on the fly last week all from Wrack Pool.
Was a tough week but always enjoyable and made a change not to get my arse whopped by Emma.
40mph winds Sat morning so we left early and didn't fish. 645 miles each way but worth it!

I remember fishing the Wrack beat a few years back. We had a good week because the water had been high and falling all week. All the fish we had were sea liced. It was a September week and I really don't know why we never went back. As you know with salmon fishing it's all about timing and that's all about luck especially with weather and water height. The Exe at Exe bridges was coloured today so there may be an opportunity to get it right before the end of the season. Colin.

Spookily enough over the years I have found the Wrack fishes better with lower water as the fish "nose" onto the beat but if it rises they really race through and are only really caught 2 or 3 beats higher. As you mention a falling river can be perfect there. This year though I saw no real signs of fresh fish on the water or as I mentioned, any runners either.
I love it there though.
I was working on the Taw today and we had two close shaves with a salmon and hooked one which was on briefly but came off. Think we hit a pod of fish that were running through. Very exciting!

Looking down to the Wrack. The tail in the foreground gave up 4 fish and one lost in a fantastic hour or so of fishing. The fish were running up the fast water and stopping in the tail for a rest, classic salmon catching situation. Colin.

I've never been salmon fishing but may be heading to Scotland next year, a couple of friends rented a cottage this summer with it's own access to a river (not sure which I'd have to check) but they get decent annual returns.... We may go together next year. My mate has done fly fishing on and off for years (by his own admission not to a high level, but reasonable) it was his first time salmon fishing. We were chatting about it when he got back and he'd really struggled casting any distance until a local gave him some pointers. Surprisingly it became obvious that I actually knew more about the principles of salmon fishing and Spey casting than he did, which doesn't say a lot as I know very little apar from watching some Spey casting vids. If we do arrange to go next year I'll have to pick your brains before we go, I ain't travelling 600 miles without having a vague idea what to do This year the water was really low and catches were very low along the river the week they were there. Interestingly there were some stonking Browns knocking about as well, I can see me going salmon fishing for a week, but actually spending it stalking 4lb plus Browns... Sounds like a nice spot, right by the river, wives can drink wine, sunbathe and sit in the hot tub.... I've already warned them, don't expect to see me a lot...... A beat to myself, I'll be fishing dawn to dusk

Colin, lovely, that's from lower glide looking down wrack and I've caught fish from where you say too. Leaving your fly on the dangle for a bit and just tweaking it can work well there too.
The lip just above there is good when they are running too. Bridge pool at the top has changed a lot this year and was a shadow of it's former self.
Boisker, if you get the chance take it, I seem to find myslef chasing salmon more than anything else these days and love it. Although I did catch a few trout on this trip I usually leave my trout gear at home and concentrate on the salmon. You'll pick up spey casting in no time bud.

Well done on the fish Pete. The Deveron is a lovely river just like the Taw!

I'm sure I'd get well into it Pete, I've never tried two handed Spey casts, but there's something about it that looks very relaxing... But with a chance of a very large brown I'll definitely be packing my trout gear as well

I spent a couple of hours doing some pruning on the river this morning ready for the off. Despite the wind, the sun shone and the water didn't feel too cold either.
