Many thanks.
Don't fight it! I have a Leonard from Luke that is a wonderful fishing rod too.
I'm getting very close on pulling the trigger on some glass. Very close.

Yeah the Leonard was fantastic as well... They both really surprised me, you have to modify your casting stroke a little, but nothing like as much as I expected, slightly more gentle if anything.... and you can get really tight loops I bought a 6’ 3w reddington butterstick glass for fishing the Wraxall... it hasn’t grabbed me it all, very ‘meh’.... no doubt the rod rather than glass... but the bonus is... it means it isn’t an itch I have at the moment

I fish a 3wt Gold on the Leonard and although it probably sounds an unlikely pairing it is a fabulous match. I used it at a demo to show how getting a rod/line combo that works for you can make a significant impact on your enjoyment and also probably success.
I've never felt the need or urge to own a super short rod and will make do with bow casting where I can't fit a cast in and then have fun thinking about how to get a fly into a spot in the other places. I cast a 6ft graphite rod a while back and it wasn't for me but I get how they might useful. My guess is that with more room to make a longer cast on such a small stream that there might be more potential to line fish though.
Each to their own though.

Some great podcasts lately Pete, aren’t you tempted by a silk line for the Leonard?

Many thanks Elvers, I'm pleased you are enjoying them.
I do have silk lines but I have never got round to using them. They may work really well but the unlikely combination I stumbled upon has served me really well so, for the time being, I'll stick with it.
Do I take it you're a cane user?

I’m more cane curious than a proper user. I’ve tried some of the old stuff which didn’t do it for me. Maybe I should take the plunge, buy a cane and not be tempted by another Sage. I do like silk though, the drying bit is a bit of a faugh, it’s debatable if it casts quite as well but the way it lands and comes off the water is fantastic. Regards Richard

I can only recommend fishing with more modern cane rods and am lucky to have a modest collection that all see the light of day and I thoroughly enjoy fishing. I think I feel the same about treating a silk line, it is probably a subconscious reason why I don't use it. If you ever fancy a go, let me know. Conditions allowing, I reckon we are well overdue a forum meet up, it has been a while.

Cool, well that is two of us.
I have a new addition that will be perfect for Dartmoor although I am still reeling from the 27% import duty!

From Italy, it's a Gatti, a rod brand I've always admired and hoped one day to own. 9ft 2/3wt and fits into the rod armoury perfectly!

They've been around for a while and I've always wanted them. Even the tube looks cool.
What with the rain then the wind, I've not had a chance to get outside with it and get properly acquainted. Hopefully soon.

Well... I didn’t even make it to the start of the season before succumbing ... not a cane rod, but a 9’6” 3w P4 Stickman... ... everyone must be getting excited about the new season and buying new rods.. he’s very busy, 10 week delivery time.... so hopefully by mid-May... mmm... I now need a new reel and line... decisions, decisions

Good choice, they look a fine rod. I always find it is best not to fight it, just go with it!
I forgot to post the latest podcast which is about planning road trips, home water and a look inside Fly Culture too.

I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with Simon Gawesworth and talking all things fishy. Despite living near Washington these days, his heart still lies in the fishing of Devon.
