Tungsten Black bead Polyphaetis- for bright days and spooky fish. From on stream guide has just given me my best two hours on the tone with 3 grayling and bootifull wild brownie to 8/10 inches. Can endure checkouts now M

Well I started fishing at 08.39. A minor time according to Solunar app with a rating of 3 out of 4 for the period ending 10.09. I caught 8 fish,7 grayling & a brown trout! Well chuffed Fishing first single black Bibio . Couple of strikes no hook ups. Went to change rods and no rod in holder on jacket! Very expensive Fieldmaster lost! Turned round to see it floating! easily spotted by T/USA new Keeper floating prominently. Then came the action. Very special day with the river gods M

Had my second trip to the Tone today... First trip was the wellisford beat on TFFC only had an hour or so... Bumped a couple, spooked a couple, found my 8' rod was a tad long and ran into a swarm of bees.... Nil fish caught, hasty retreat from the bees, must revisit. Went to the lower Bradford beat for a couple of hours late afternoon today... I had intended to go to the upper beat but I forgot the beat map for access points. Great bit of water, as it was the first vsiit I went to the bottom of the beat and worked back up quickly with a dry. Had 7 fish in about 2 hrs... A couple of beautiful 12-13" fish all but one coming from rising fish. They were predominantly siping something from the surface, very easy to miss, but they were still happy to take initially a size 18 CDC biot emerger and then towards the top of the beat a cdc deer hair sedge. I also spotted a couple of really decent sized grayling, I'd guess about 1-1.5 lb, that were sat deep in pools, something to go with a nymph for on a future visit. There was also about 5 decent sized trout 12-14" sat at the bottom of the bridge pool, but I'd already rung home to say I was just leaving, so again something to pick up on next time. Only down side... I stood on my line at one point and I think it must have been between a sharp stone and one of the cleats on my wading boots... Cut the line right through as clean as a surgeons scalpel.... Bugger! Luckily it's not a big river so I just tied it back together an fished with the knot somewhere between my reel and first eye. Looking forward to trying the upper beat. Definitely like the Tone.

Popped up to the Tone again for a couple of hours this eve and apart from casting like an arse for half the session had some nice fish. All Grayling for a change, 3 decent sized ones.... One at 13" and 2 bang on 12 ".... My rod has 12" & 20" marked on it so makes it easy to measure ...... Plus 5 more in the 8-10" range. I'm looking forward to some grayling fishing this winter on the Tone and getting to know the beats better. Spooked a bigger grayling... Waded right up to it with noticing it! It will be interesting find out how big the grow.

Joly good, might make things interesting. Hope it doesn't colour up or I might have to shoot over to the chalk streams to get some fishing in. Always have a back up plan.

Welsh Tenkara Grand finale Fished the Severn yesterday at caersws. River clear and quite low. Reports from other(very friendly)bods "plenty of grayling " well not for us! and lovely fishing all the same. We will just fish this last pool! Fish rising! Not grayling! Tied on stiff hackle fly tied by John Pearson. Bang took it just below surface! Short tippett (2ft) meant fish making for tree roots thwarted. Jon beer folding net fumbled out for first time in earnest and the most beautiful fine brown trout was there to behold! Fly actually in fishes tongue. Part of me wanted to take her to eat. Luck said no! As I unhooked her in the shallows off she went! Hilary was present so at least I had a witness. Checking the WBT size chart an agreed 15-16 inch excellent meant a pb of 2.75 lb. Wet note, second waders leak through backside! Penguin walk back to car, kelly kettle and cuppa! M&h

With just a few days left of WBT on the tone help was needed at work so am starting an hour later. This coincided with a 3 fish lunar period so it had to be done! One rod out of action (more later) I set out wish duo on the masu & a JP special on Oni one bamboo. Nothing doing so in desperation tried JP special. A grayling kept looking & not taking then I saw a better fish heading off downstream. It took the fly & was a perfect WBT about 8-10" in full mating colours ! I wished her luck & then caught a decent grayling on the same fly of similar size at next pool. Almost perfect end! Arrived home to find spare section From t bum without the dreaded vat + collection fee added! Some days it's so much more than just fishing!

Sounds like you had something close to a perfect day marcouns and I share your sentiments about it being more than just the fishing.

Tenkara on the Tone Last day tomorrow. Went to try out new section on Fieldmaster with single nymph. A couple of casts and see my level line ,tippet and fly drifting perfectly down stream. Only one problem Not attached to Lilian! Only got spools of tippet so carried on with 9' of heaviest + 3' lightweight +nymph. Interesting. No takes almost invisible and kept fishing! Most important

More to fishing. Excuse the ramble. As I near retirement I find myself reflecting more. Life has always been about work and fitting pastimes as&lwhen. Five years ago I started fishing. Now my inner journey has been torturous. C of E ,outright rejection of organised "religious " activity, dabbling in meditation & more recently mindfulness. Get to the point I hear from all points of the compass! Today was set to be a washout due to rain & Autumn leaves. Day cancelled! Being a cussed bloke, took wife to work & started chucking a secret nymph in the now falling water. A large fish was suddenly airborne & not interested in my nymph. A further chuck just below the weir proved fruitless and the twenty minutes watching fish try to climb the weir. The " other"? Is amazing! If anyone can 1.edit my slo-mo film to single frame images2.identify the species please pm me & I will email the file. Awesome!

Good to hear you got out Marcouns, I have seen both salmon and what I guess to be sea trout running weirs on the Tone when fishing with Toby.

Frustrating infuriating calming sublime! All in a few days fishing. In dock because of middle ear blockage causing deafness in right ear together with dawn chorus & vertigo. Had to cancel long arranged trip to my nearest chalk stream! Then broke top two sections on my Fieldmaster rod( £ 55 + customs ) & then today river fishable, single John Pearson nymph and 4 fish! Well 3 & a greedy tiddler! So now cuppa and more birdsong!

Popped over to the tone for a couple of hours this afternoon, more to practice euro nymph technique than any serious fishing intention. Having only fished the tone this year it was nice to see it with a bit more water in it. The first hour I had a couple of tangles but it was slowly getting better. Two things were immediately obvious- I've no accuracy at the moment when euro-French nymphing at 25-30'. I can't wait for new waders to be delivered this week.... Trying to avoid wading/crossing deeper areas of the river really does interfere with how well you can fish it. Felt a bit strange fishing the long French leader, felt slightly out of control and sync, but I guess with practice the feeling will come. Only picked up one small grayling, hopefully I'll get out for a longer session this week.
One last thing- shame to see cattle still in riverside fields in mid-December, fields were looking heavily poached.... No wonder our rivers aren't what they could be!
